Rostec expands Russian UAV defense arsenal with two SBA-70K4 Rat versions.

At the current Army-2023 event, Ruselectronics, a branch of Rostec State Corporation, is displaying two variants of the Rat system, a mobile unit designed for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) defense, based on the SBA-70K4 6X6 armored personnel carrier (APC).

The Rat system integrates active radar, UAV detection and suppression mechanisms, and equipment for monitoring in environments with zero visibility. Two versions of the Rat are presented: one equipped with a directed laser destruction system for UAV interference, and another variant armed with a gun-type weaponry with a remote projectile detonation feature.

The system houses an active radar capable of identifying small drones from a distance of 4 km. Its integrated detection and suppression function autonomously scans the airspace, detecting and interrupting UAV control signals within a 1.5 km range. The APC also includes an optoelectronic reconnaissance and surveillance system for vehicle monitoring in obscured visibility conditions.

The cannon variant of the Rat uses a remote combat module with a 30mm cannon, paired with a projectile detonation control system, allowing for target engagement up to 4 km away.

The foundation of the Rat system is the SBA-70K4 armored vehicle, a joint effort between Ruselectronics and NPP "Istok" specialists. All components within the Rat are integrated into a centralized onboard information and control system, which processes data from detection and surveillance tools, providing operators with action options.

The Rat is designed to address drone threats across various terrains and is suitable for protecting both stationary and mobile assets. Potential users range from law enforcement to international entities.

The SBA-70K4, which serves as the base for the Rat system, is a successor of the Bulat SBA-60-K2 6x6 armored vehicle and utilizes the KAMAZ 5350 Mustang chassis. The SBA-70K4 is designed for multiple terrains and conditions, emphasizing mobility and protection. Its modular design allows for the integration of different systems.

Produced by NPK SBA LLC, the SBA-70K4 is categorized as a mine-protected armored vehicle, meeting the standards of modern MRAP (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicles. It was first introduced at the "Army-2020" forum. The vehicle's design incorporates materials and techniques to enhance its resistance against bullets and mines. Adhering to the GOST R 34282–2017 protection class Br5, the SBA-70K4 is resistant to ammunition such as the 7.62 × 54 mm cartridge with armor-piercing incendiary bullet B-32 and the cartridge with increased penetration bullet 7N13. Additionally, it can resist land mine explosions equivalent to 4 kg of TNT.

In operational terms, the SBA-70K4 has a range of 1000 km and a top speed of 90 km/h. With its 6x6 all-wheel-drive setup, it offers resistance to 7.62 mm caliber bullets. Even with damaged tires, it maintains the capability to travel 50 km at speeds of 50 km/h. The vehicle's primary function is to transport and protect personnel and to serve as a platform for military equipment. It operates effectively on a variety of road types and in different climatic conditions.

Given the developments in the Ukrainian conflict, there's a recognized need for efficient drone defense systems. Drones have become integral in modern warfare for reconnaissance and sometimes for combat. The Rat, with its drone defense capabilities, offers a solution to these airborne threats, aiming to protect ground units and infrastructure. Its adaptability to different terrains highlights its utility in various warfare situations.
