Belgium to supply Ukraine with state-of-the-art SCAR assault rifles and MINIMI machine guns


On January 27, 2023, Belgium announced a new military aid for Ukraine worth €93.6 million including the latest generation of SCAR assault rifles and MINIMI light machine guns manufactured by the Belgian company FN Herstal.

Belgium will also provide Ukraine with 80 Iveco LMV Lynx vehicles and 150 Volvo trucks that were in service with the Belgian army. Since the beginning of the War in Ukraine, Belgium has already provided Ukrainian armed with military equipment and weapons for the amount of around €90 million. This new military aid from Belgium is worth €93.6 million and it is the largest single military delivery to another country.

Citing information from the Belgian Ministry of Defense Ludivine Dedonder, part of the weapons and ammunition that will be delivered to Ukraine comes from the military stocks of the Belgian army but another part of the weapons will be ordered from the Belgian defense industry.

With the delivery of SCAR assault rifles and MINIMI light machine guns, the Ukrainian army will be equipped with state-of-the-art small weapons which are in service with several countries all over the world.

The SCAR (Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle) is the latest generation of modular assault rifles designed and manufactured by the Belgian company FN Herstal for use by military and special operations forces. It is available in two main variants: the SCAR-L (Light) chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, and the SCAR-H (Heavy) chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO.

The FN SCAR assault rifle features a modular design that allows for easy customization and maintenance and is available in both semi-automatic and automatic firing modes. It is used by military and special operations forces around the world, including the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM).

The MINIMI is a light machine that was developed and produced by FN Herstal in Belgium. It is a lightweight, belt-fed machine gun that is widely used by military and police forces around the world. It is often used as a squad automatic weapon (SAW) and has been adopted by many special forces units.

The MINIMI is a gas-operated, air-cooled machine gun that fires the 5.56x45mm and 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge. This machine gun is capable of both automatic and semi-automatic fire and is known for its high accuracy, reliability, and ease of use.
