On January 18, 2023, the Canadian Ministry of Defense published a statement to announce that will donate 200 Senator Armored Personnel Carriers (APC) to Ukraine. This new package of military assistance responds to a specific Ukrainian request for these vehicles, which are being purchased from Roshel, a Canadian company based in Mississauga, Ontario. This aid is valued at over $90 million and is allocated as part of the additional $500 million in military aid for Ukraine announced by Prime Minister Trudeau in November 2022.
During a meeting with its Ukrainian counterpart, Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov, the Canadian defense minister, Anita Anand, discussed how Canada can continue to meet Ukraine’s pressing defense needs. Minister Reznikov commended Canada for the over $1 billion in military assistance committed to Ukraine since February 2022. This assistance includes a National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) with associated munitions, 39 ACSV armored combat support vehicles, anti-tank weapons, M777 155mm towed howitzers and associated ammunition, and more.
Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand also updated Minister Reznikov on the progress of Operation UNIFIER – Canada’s training mission for Ukrainian personnel, currently active in the United Kingdom and Poland. Approximately 230 Canadian Armed Forces personnel are currently deployed on Operation UNIFIER, which has trained over 35,000 Ukrainian security forces personnel since its launch in 2015. Minister Anand highlighted ongoing efforts by the Royal Canadian Air Force Air Mobility Detachment based in Prestwick, Scotland to transport Ukraine-bound military aid donated by Canada, Allies, and partners, and noted that Canada has transported over six million pounds of Ukraine-bound military aid within Europe so far.
The Roshel Senator APC is already in service with the Ukrainian Border Guards. Citing open source information, in terms of combat vehicles, currently, Canada will have already delivered to Ukraine 39 Armored Combat Support Vehicles (ACSVs) and 8 Roshel Senator 4x4 APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) vehicles.
The Senator is a 4x4 APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) designed and manufactured by the Canadian company Roshel that was unveiled in October 2018 during the AUSA Defense Exhibition in Washington D.C. The vehicle is based on the heavy Ford F-550/F600 pickup truck's commercial chassis offering a high level of mobility in all-terrain conditions.
The Senator hull provides ballistic protection against the firing of small arms up to a 12.7mm machine gun as well as against the explosion of two DM51 hand grenades or their equivalent. The new design of the Roshel Senator also integrates active protection systems that ensure maximum operational efficiency.
As an APC (Armored Personnel Carrier), the Senator has a crew of two seated at the front of the vehicle and the rear part of the hull can accommodate up to 10 infantrymen. The vehicle is powered by a Diesel engine developing 330 hp at 2,600 rpm coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle can reach a top road speed of 110 km/h.
