North Macedonia has launched a defense plan to modernize its armed forces through American and German military assistance. The North Macedonian defense force is composed of the Army of North Macedonia and the Military Police. The Army of North Macedonia is responsible for the defense of the country, while the Military Police is responsible for maintaining order within the armed forces and providing security for military facilities

North Macedonia formally became NATO’s 30th member on 27 March 2020. A strategic defense review was released in 2018, which set out aims to optimize, reorganize and modernize the armed forces into a small, modern, and flexible force. A 2019–2028 Defense Capability Development Plan (DCDP) consolidated long-term development goals aimed at developing collective defense, cooperative security, and crisis-management capabilities. The country's defense budget for 2021 is around $12.6 billion.

Currently, the North Macedonia armed forces are equipped with Soviet-made combat equipment and armored vehicles. In recent years, North Macedonia has been looking to modernize its armored vehicle fleet and has been in talks with several countries and companies to purchase new vehicles.

In March 2021, the United States approved the delivery of 54 Stryker 8x8 armored vehicles to North Macedonia. On August 3, 2020, it was announced that North Macedonia ordered JLTVs (Joint Light Tactical Vehicles) manufactured by the American company Oshkosh Defense.

With the acquisition of the Turkish-made Boran howitzer, North Macedonia continues to modernize its armed forces with military equipment to reach the NATO standard.

The Boran 105mm howitzer is a type of artillery weapon developed and manufactured by the Turkish company, Boran Silah Sanayi. It is a towed howitzer, which means it is designed to be transported and fired from a towed position, as opposed to being mounted on a vehicle or other platform.

The Boran 105mm howitzer has a maximum range of 11.5 km (7.1 mi) and can fire a variety of different types of shells, including high-explosive, smoke, and illuminating rounds. It can be operated by a crew of six and is typically used for both direct and indirect fire support in combat operations.

It was first unveiled in 2017 at the Turkish defense exhibition IDEF. It recently entered into service with the Turkish Armed Forces, and also has been proposed for export to other countries.
