According to recent statements made by Jan Dam, chief of the Danish Air Force, and repeated across a multitude of pro-Russian and pro-Ukraine Telegram accounts, Denmark has finished training 50 Ukrainians in connection with F-16s. Pro-Ukraine Telegram accounts talk about pilots, while pro-Russian accounts mention technicians.

In an article from the Danish newspaper Nyheder Tv2, Jan Dam, head of Danish military aviation, discusses maintenance workers and armament specialists.

Denmark is less optimistic about the operational effect of the F-16s. He states, "In addition, a hundred Ukrainians are being trained for support tasks such as mechanics, armament specialists, and ground staff for Ukrainian air bases. We have now completed the first 50, most of whom have returned home to participate in the preparation of the first combat aircraft. Just after the summer holidays, we will tackle the next 50 years," says Jan Dam. Regarding pilots, he notes that Denmark is not there yet, but the first are about to be ready.

Moreover, he specifies that Denmark will announce when the planes are ready in Ukraine. He affirms that the planes will operate from bases in Ukraine that are about to be operational.

We can therefore conclude that, as of June 29, 2024, the bases are not ready, as also stated by Xavier Tytelman in a video on his Air and Cosmos website.

A departure base in Romania?

There is the issue of the European training center in Romania at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, located less than 200 km from the border. The F-16s present in Romania are for training. Although it is possible to quickly transform the Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base into an operational base, this is complicated to justify.

Indeed, this would de facto extend the war to another European country, in NATO, which leaders categorically refuse.

Today, this base is undergoing significant modernization, with the creation of a new taxiway and a take-off runway. This led to the belief that this base was being modernized for the F-16s, having been the site of international exercises.

Strikes without announcements?

The F-16 is an element that keeps public interest alive regarding the Ukrainian situation, with Ukrainians doing a great deal of communication. It is evident that as soon as the first F-16 in Ukrainian colors is widely relayed, as well as the first strikes carried out, there will be significant popular enthusiasm. Yet, this has not happened.

Ordinarily, there are announcements as soon as the F-16 is linked to Ukraine, generating real popular excitement.
