The Polish government approved the procurement of the 155mm KRAB howitzers in late 2006.
In December 2016, the Polish Company Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW) has signed a contract for the delivery of artillery vehicles to the Polish Army for a total amount of around €1 billion for the purchase of 96 KRAB 155mm self-propelled howitzer armored vehicles. The first unit to receive 24 Krabs by 2017 will be the 11th Masurian Artillery Regiment in Węgorzewo. At the end of June 2019, a batch of series manufactured KRABs has been introduced into the inventory of the Sulechów-based 5th “Lubuski” Artillery Regiment of the Polish army.
The KRAB is a 155mm self-propelled howitzer based on a tracked chassis manufactured by the Polish company Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW) in cooperation with BAE Systems and OBRUM. The first KRAB prototype was completed in June 2001 and in July 2011, the first KRAB prototype had completed its first firing tests.
The KRAB is based on the chassis of the South Korean K9 self-propelled howitzer fitted with a British AS-90M Braveheart turret with a 52-caliber gun and WB Electronics “Topaz” artillery fire control system.
The main armament of the KRAB consists of one 155mm 52 caliber cannon designed and manufactured by BAE Systems. The gun can fire all standard 155mm NATO projectiles with a range from 4.7 to 40 km.
