Analysis : China defense industry continues to develop long-range precision guided cruise missile. | |||
China's military is developing long-range precision-guided cruise missile with the purpose to prevent foreign aircraft carriers from getting close to the coast of China, which will greatly restrict the combat capability of US aircraft carriers, said a foreign media report. (Source Chinamil website)

Military expert Li Jie, researcher with the Naval Military Academic Research Institute, said in an interview that China has enhanced the ability of "Anti-Access / Area Denial" (A2/AD) so that the US cannot just takes military actions recklessly. This is also the reason why the US continues to get involved in the South China Sea issue in recent years and wants to improve the capability of its aircraft carrier battle groups.
A report recently released by the Center for a New American Security said that although the US Navy has the "freedom of navigation" in the global seas, this unchallenged dominance will face termination. Because in recent years, many countries including China, Russia and Iran have invested heavily to enhance the A2/AD capabilities, such as advanced air defense systems, anti-ship missiles, submarines and aircraft carriers. The Chinese military is developing long-range precision-guided cruise missile with the purpose to prevent foreign aircraft carriers from getting close to Chinese coasts and therefore foreign carrier must stay far away from the coast and the combat radius of their carrier-based fighter jets is also affected. All these will greatly limit the combat capability of US aircraft carriers.

For threats brought by long-range anti-ship missiles and precision-guided weapons, there are concerns whether the aircraft carrier is able to perform in future operational environment.
Some even want to use faster and more flexible small aircraft carriers to replace the heavy and inflexible large aircraft carriers to avoid enemy fire. Unmanned aerial vehicle can also land from the platform on small aircraft carriers. Some also want to equip aircraft carriers with defense technology or missile interception equipment. Some even worry that in the future, aircraft carriers will be out of date. However, the US Navy is confident that their aircraft carrier's force projection capability and fighter jet combat group is a decisive military advantage compared with the rest of the world. Li Jie believes that the US is very worried about anti-ship missiles, large bombers and other equipment that may bring severe challenges to its so-called freedom of navigation and freedom of over-flight in the coastal waters of other countries.

China has enhanced its anti-ship missiles, improved the long-range capability of bombers, and strengthened the air cruise missile configuration and A2/AD capabilities in recent years. Such improvements of China have kept the US from making reckless military actions. This is an important reason why the US continues to get involved in the South China Sea issue in recent years and wants to improve the capability of its aircraft carrier battle groups, Li added.
Li Jie also expressed that the CJ-10 ground based land-attack cruise missile, the DF-21D ballistic missile and the DF-26 medium-to-long-range ballistic missile and other weapons were released at last year's V-Day parade in Beijing. The maximum range of the DF-26 is 4,000 km while the distance from the Chinese mainland coast to Guam is only about 2,800 km. Therefore, Li continued, such a distance is within the range of Chinese missiles, and that is the biggest concern of the US.
The DF-26 is an intermediate-range ballistic missile of the Chinese-made Dongfeng (DF) missile family produced by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC). The DF-26 is based on the DF-21 missile and has range of about 3,500 - 4,000 km is roughly the distance required for China to take out the US island territory and strategic naval base. |
