New K-4386 Typhoon-VDV 4x4 armored vehicles in Ukraine for Russian airborne troops



The K-4386 Typhoon-VDV, another new 4x4 armored vehicle designed for Russian airborne troops is now deployed in Ukraine to perform combat operations. The vehicle was unveiled in 2019 at the Military Technical Forum defense exhibition that was held near Moscow.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine that started on February 24, 2022, the Russian army is involved its full range of new military capabilities including air defense, artillery and rocket artillery, long-range precision missile systems, combat vehicles, and tanks.

In recent months, during the fighting on Ukrainian territory, we have seen that the Russian army has deployed the latest generation of armored vehicles and artillery systems developed by the Russian defense industry

In recent weeks, Russia has further strengthened the shipment of new military equipment and armored vehicles recently developed by the Russian defense industries such as t such as the T-90M, the T-80BVM, 2S19-SM2, BMPT Model 2017, Tornado-S, Buk-M3 as well as the use of new hypersonic missile.

The K-4386 Typhoon-VDV is based on a 4x4 truck chassis and was developed and designed by Remdiesel, a subsidiary of Kamaz. According to the manufacturer, it offers ballistic and mine protection as an MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle.

The layout consists of three main parts with the engine at the front, the crew and troops compartments in the middle, and a remotely controlled weapon station mounted on the roof. It has a length of 6 m, a width of 2.54 m, and a height of 2.4 m with a curb weight of 11,000 kg. It can accommodate eight personnel, including a driver and commander.

The roof of the hull is fitted with a remotely operated weapon station armed with on 30mm 2A42 automatic cannon and one PKTM 7.62mm machine gun. The 2A4 cannon has a dual feed which is used for HE-T (High Explosive Tracer) and the other for AP-T (Armor-Piercing Tracer) rounds. The gunner can select one of two rates of fully automatic fire, low at 200 to 300 rds/min and high at 550 to 800 rds/min. The gun has an effective range against ground targets such as light armored vehicles of 1,500 m while soft-skinned targets can be engaged out to 4,000 m. It can be also used to destroy aerial targets with a maximum firing range of 3,000 m.
