The cumulative losses for Russia in this conflict are considerable and have yet to be fully assessed. To date, Russia has lost a total of 16,906 pieces of equipment. Of these, 12,257 have been destroyed, 759 damaged, 969 abandoned, and 2,921 captured by Ukrainian forces. Specifically focusing on tanks, Russia has lost 3,235 units, with 2,199 destroyed, 156 damaged, 362 abandoned, and 518 captured.
In addition to these losses, a series of leaks have provided access to user manuals for various Russian military systems, including the Tor-M1 air defense system and the T-80BVM, T-90S, and T-90M main battle tanks. The leaked manual for the T-90M, covering a total of 496 pages, offers detailed insights into its capabilities and operational procedures.
The T-90M tank is equipped with a 125 mm 2A46M-5-01 smoothbore cannon, stabilized in both horizontal and vertical planes to ensure precise targeting. This main gun can fire various types of ammunition, including armor-piercing sub-caliber, cumulative, high-explosive fragmentation, and guided missiles. The gun utilizes an automatic loader system, housing 22 ready-to-use rounds, with the remaining 18 rounds stored in the turret's aft module. It can achieve an estimated firing range of 12,000 meters with high-explosive fragmentation projectiles when firing from a prepared position. The recoil length ranges from 260 to 310 mm, depending on the conditions. The tank's fire control system is automated and multispectral, enhancing its ability to engage targets accurately.
In addition to the main gun, the T-90M features a PKTM 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun, designated as 6P7K, to target infantry and light vehicles up to 1,500 meters away. This machine gun can be fired electrically or manually and has a rate of fire between 700 and 800 rounds per minute. Additionally, the tank features a 12.7 mm 6P49/Kord machine gun mounted as part of a remote-controlled weapon station, positioned on the right side of the turret. This machine gun can engage targets up to 2,000 meters away, with a rate of fire between 100 and 200 rounds per minute. Both machine guns utilize a tape feed system.
The T-90M is powered by a V-92S2F engine, a four-stroke, V-shaped 12-cylinder diesel engine with liquid cooling and direct fuel injection. This engine, coupled with an automatic gear shift system, delivers a maximum power of 831 kW (1,130 hp) and produces a maximum torque of 4,521 Nm at 2,000 rpm. This allows the T-90M to achieve a maximum road speed of 60 km/h and an operational range of up to 550 km with additional fuel barrels. According to the tank's manual, fuel consumption ranges from 285 liters per 100 km on highways to 500 liters per 100 km on dirt roads. The T-90M can ford water depths up to 1.8 meters with preparation and cross ditches up to 2.8 meters wide.

The T-90M employs several protection systems to ensure crew safety and maintain operational integrity. The tank features modular dynamic protection, including 48 blocks of 4S23 Relikt explosive reactive armor, which provides defense against both armor-piercing and cumulative rounds. The tank's collective protection system safeguards the crew from nuclear, biological, and chemical threats, utilizing a filter-ventilation unit with an FPT-100B filter absorber. Together with the 3ETs13-1 system, the fire suppression system, which includes freon 13B1 extinguishing agents, operates in automatic, semi-automatic, and emergency modes, equipped with multiple sensors and extinguishing units. Additionally, the tank employs a laser warning system and an automatic system for deploying smoke screens to interfere with laser-guided weapons. Finally, the crew and internal equipment are protected against weapons of mass destruction through a system that shields against shock waves, radioactive dust, and chemical and biological agents.
The T-90M also integrates modern navigation and communication systems to maintain situational awareness and coordinate with other units. The unified automated commander workstation incorporates satellite navigation equipment compatible with GLONASS and GPS systems, providing positional data while offering a root mean square error of 1% of the distance traveled when operating in offline mode. The communication system supports multiple frequency ranges, from meter to decimeter bands, and includes Wi-Fi capabilities for short-range data exchange at speeds of up to 11 Mbit/s. This system facilitates secure voice and data transmission, ensuring reliable communication in various operational conditions.
The T-90M includes various auxiliary equipment to enhance its operational capabilities. This includes a diesel generator set to provide electricity when stationary, an external video surveillance system, and a thermoelectric air conditioner for climate control within the tank. Additionally, it has a built-in bulldozer blade for self-digging trenches and an underwater driving kit for traversing water obstacles. The tank's defensive capabilities are further supported by twelve 81 mm smoke grenade launchers for creating smoke screens, using 3D17, 3D6, or 3D6M smoke grenades. In terms of camouflage, the T-90M is covered by a three-color deformation coating named XC-5146 and can be covered with the Nadidka camouflage system weighing 125 kg, located in a single tank spare parts kit.
