Sweden Makes Historic Commitment with Largest Military Aid Package to Ukraine.

On January 30, 2025, the Swedish government announced its largest military support package to date for Ukraine, valued at SEK 13.5 billion. This new package aims to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities, with a focus on enhancing its production of long-range missiles and drones. Sweden is committing SEK 1 billion to assist Ukraine in producing high-precision missiles and unmanned aerial systems, thereby strengthening its technological and industrial defense capacities.

With this announcement, Sweden has delivered its eighteenth military support package to Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022. With this new commitment, Sweden's total support to Ukraine now exceeds SEK 61.9 billion. The package encompasses a broad range of measures designed to support Ukraine in several defense sectors.

A significant portion of the funding, SEK 5.9 billion, will be used to procure military equipment from Swedish and other European defense industries, which will then be donated to Ukraine. This acquisition includes essential systems and materials intended to reinforce Ukraine’s military capabilities.

Sweden will also allocate SEK 2.8 billion in financial aid to Ukraine to support funds for the purchase of military equipment and ammunition. Among this assistance, SEK 1 billion will specifically be used to support Ukraine’s domestic production of long-range missiles and drones, thereby enhancing the country’s ability to produce advanced weapon systems locally.

Another key component of the package involves donations of equipment from the Swedish Armed Forces, valued at SEK 3.3 billion. This includes 146 trucks, 16 new Combat Boat 90s (doubling the previous donation of 16), 23 weapon stations for marine use, 1 million units of 12.7 mm ammunition, 1,500 TOW anti-tank missiles, 200 anti-tank weapons, including training materials, as well as infantry and unit-level equipment, including personal protective equipment for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) risks.

Sweden will also continue to support Ukraine’s efforts in research and training, with SEK 180 million allocated to Sweden's Defence Research Agency and the Swedish Defence University. The Research Agency will assist in establishing a similar agency in Ukraine, while the Defence University will implement an educational program in Ukraine to strengthen the country’s defense expertise.

Sweden has also planned SEK 650 million in training assistance to support various programs for Ukrainian soldiers. This includes initiatives such as Interflex, which provides basic training for new Ukrainian recruits, and these efforts will continue throughout 2025, contributing to the operational readiness of Ukraine’s armed forces.

Finally, SEK 400 million will be allocated for maintenance and logistical support for Swedish equipment already delivered to Ukraine, ensuring the continued operational availability of the provided systems.

Sweden's military support to Ukraine is always based on the needs and priorities expressed by Ukraine, with coordination ensured through bilateral communications and multilateral collaboration, particularly within capability coalitions. The Swedish government emphasizes the importance of providing newly produced and easily deliverable materiel to complement donations of material from Sweden's Armed Forces, while also enhancing the security of supply for Ukraine and its European partners.

As the conflict continues, Sweden’s support underscores its commitment to helping Ukraine strengthen its defense capabilities, particularly in the field of long-range precision strikes, which are considered essential for Ukraine's defense of its sovereignty against Russian aggression.
