Ukraine Develops Advanced Copy of Russian Lancet Loitering Munition or Kamikaze Drone.


Ukraine has successfully developed an indigenous version of the Russian Lancet loitering munition, also known as a kamikaze drone. This development was announced on July 28, 2024, through the X account of Chuck Pfarrer, a noted American defense analyst and commentator.

The Ukrainian version, the Optical-Guided Battlefield Kamikaze, is a result of intensive efforts that began as early as August 2022. Ukrainian engineers and defense experts have been working diligently to replicate and improve upon the Russian Lancet loitering munition after capturing several units from Russian forces. The Lancet has been recognized as one of Russia’s most effective battlefield weapons, prompting Ukraine to prioritize the development of its counterpart.

The Ukrainian Optical-Guided Battlefield Kamikaze drone is designed for both reconnaissance and strike missions. It boasts a maximum operational range of 40 km (25 miles), enabling it to cover significant distances and engage targets with precision. The drone is powered by a quiet electric motor, which enhances its stealth capabilities, and can achieve speeds ranging from 80 to 110 km/h (50 to 68 miles per hour).

One of the standout features of the Ukrainian kamikaze drone is its modular sensor packages and TV guidance unit. These advanced systems allow for real-time control during the terminal stages of flight, ensuring high accuracy and effectiveness in striking designated targets.
