Ukrainian Innovation by Dron ZP Targets FPV Drones with Semi-Autonomous Turret.

On January 12, 2025, the Ukrainian company Dron ZP unveiled an innovative turret designed to neutralize enemy drones, particularly FPV (First-Person View) drones, which pose an increasing threat on modern battlefields. Tested by the Unmanned Systems Battalion of the 15th Brigade of the National Guard, this new weapon highlights Ukraine's continued efforts to integrate advanced technologies into its military operations to address the challenges of contemporary warfare.

Equipped with a 12.7 mm machine gun and a night vision device, the turret utilizes neural network components, enabling precise and semi-autonomous control. Operated via a joystick connected to a monitor, the system offers an intuitive interface for operators. According to National Guard personnel, initial tests at a dedicated facility were successful, with further refinements planned before potential deployment in Ukraine’s defense lines.

Although stationary, the turret is mounted on a trailer that can be transported by road to strategic positions. Dron ZP is also developing more mobile solutions, including ground drones capable of carrying such turrets or performing tasks like casualty evacuation. In 2024, a crowdfunding campaign raised 293,000 hryvnias to purchase a ground platform developed by the company.

For years, Ukraine has been employing various technologies to counter aerial threats. Among locally developed solutions, the "Shahed Hunter" anti-drone system has gained prominence for intercepting kamikaze drones. This system, often mounted on all-terrain vehicles, is equipped with machine guns and infrared detection systems to effectively neutralize targets. Additionally, microwave weapons developed by Ukrainian companies provide a non-conventional method of disabling the electronic systems of enemy drones without using projectiles.

These developments align with a broader strategy to minimize risks to Ukrainian forces while maximizing battlefield effectiveness. The integration of fiber-optic communication systems into autonomous ground platforms also underscores the emphasis placed on connectivity and operational coordination.

Ground drones continue to play a key role in Ukraine’s military efforts. Used for transporting weapons, conducting remote mining and demining operations, and evacuating wounded soldiers, these devices significantly reduce the exposure of Ukrainian troops to danger. Their strategic use reflects a pragmatic and innovative approach to addressing the asymmetric challenges of modern warfare.

The anti-drone turret developed by Dron ZP represents a valuable asset in Ukraine’s defense efforts. Combined with other locally developed anti-drone systems, it has the potential to become a critical component in countering sophisticated aerial threats. These solutions demonstrate Ukraine's capacity to innovate in wartime, leveraging a network of public and private partnerships to meet the demands of a modern conflict, particularly as uncertainty surrounds the continuation of Western support in the months ahead.
