Russia Releases Operational Capabilities of Malva 152mm Self-Propelled Artillery System in Ukraine.


Rostec has announced that the Malva 152mm wheeled self-propelled artillery system has successfully demonstrated its capabilities in combat zones in Ukraine, receiving positive feedback from military personnel. This announcement was made by Bekkhan Ozdoyev, Industrial Director of Rostec’s Armament, Ammunition, and Special Chemicals Complex. Serial deliveries of the Malva to Russian forces began this year, following its deployment in 2022.

The Malva system, developed by the Burevestnik Central Research Institute as part of the Nabrosok R&D project, is equipped with the 152mm 2A64 howitzer, the same weapon used in the Msta-S self-propelled artillery system. This firepower is complemented by a 30-round ammunition capacity and an advanced design that enables rapid deployment and repositioning during counter-battery engagements. Mounted on a BAZ-6010-027 all-terrain chassis with an 8x8 wheel configuration, the Malva boasts exceptional mobility, allowing it to travel up to 1,000 kilometers without refueling and effectively navigate rough terrain.

The 2S43 Malva’s wheeled chassis facilitates faster movement and lower operational costs compared to tracked artillery systems. Its ability to swiftly take up positions, deliver strikes, and retreat before enemy retaliation is a significant advantage in modern warfare scenarios. The system’s maneuverability and logistical efficiency are further enhanced by its compatibility with Il-76 military transport aircraft, enabling strategic redeployment over long distances.

Weighing 32 tons, the Malva is mounted on an 8x8 all-terrain chassis, enabling a maximum road speed of 80 km/h and a range of up to 1,000 kilometers without refueling. Measuring 13 meters in length, 2.75 meters in width, and 3.1 meters in height, Malva’s imposing dimensions do not hinder its ability to move swiftly over varied terrain, even under challenging conditions. Operated by a crew of five, including a commander, driver, gunner, and two loaders, the system ensures effective coordination during firing missions.

The Malva is equipped with enhanced protection against small arms fire and artillery shell fragments, providing increased safety for its crew on the battlefield. To maximize its effectiveness, it features an advanced fire control system that includes a ballistic computer, GPS navigation, and automated targeting capabilities. These technologies reduce the time required to engage a target while improving firing precision. Additionally, the vehicle is fitted with thermal imaging and night vision devices, smoke grenade launchers, and an auxiliary power unit (APU) to maintain operational autonomy even when the main engine is off.

Exclusively designed and used by Russia, the Malva emphasizes rapid deployment and tactical repositioning, essential for executing swift strikes while avoiding enemy counterfire. Its wheeled architecture distinguishes it from tracked artillery systems, offering superior strategic mobility and lower maintenance costs without compromising its firepower capabilities.

Weighing 32 tons, the Malva marks an evolution in Russian artillery systems, combining firepower with operational agility. Initially unveiled in a closed format in 2019, the system reflects Russia’s ongoing investment in wheeled artillery platforms, which provide a balance of power, mobility, and reduced maintenance requirements.

The deployment and performance of the Malva in Ukraine underscore its strategic value in counter-battery combat and support missions, reinforcing its role as a key asset within Russia’s modernized artillery forces.
