Analysis : Russia’s Buk-M3 medium-range air defense system
The advanced Buk-M3 surface-to-air missile (SAM) system produced by Russia’s Almaz-Antey Corporation is superior to all operational mobile medium-range SAM complexes, CEO of the Tikhomirov Instrument-Making Research Institute Yuri Bely said in an interview with Interfax news agency.

Russia’s Armed Forces have already started to receive the state-of-the-art Buk-M3 system, he added.

"Firstly, the battalion’s missile load has been considerably increased, which boosts the system’s combat capability to repel a massive air strike," Bely said.

"Each transporter-erector-launcher accommodates six instead of four combat-ready missiles and each launcher has 12 instead of eight missiles," he added.

According to him, the Buk-M3 system’s kill zone has been increased for all targets from aircraft to tactical and cruise missiles. Its jamming resistance, survivability and reliability have been improved.

"The Buk-M3 system is superior to none in terms of combat effectiveness," Bely said in reply to an Interfax question about whether the Buk-M3 system had foreign-made rivals.
He also said that "the European SAMP-T system can be considered as an analog [of the Buk-M3 SAM system] to a certain extent."

As the CEO said, an advanced missile developed for the Buk-M3 SAM system is second to none too. The missile has been developed by the Almaz-Antey Corporation’s subsidiary in Dolgoprudny near Moscow.
"The advanced 9M317M missile has been developed and is being produced for the Buk-M3 air defense missile system. Unlike the 9M317 missile designed for the Buk-M2 [NATO reporting name: SA-17 Grizzly] system, the operational capacities of the 9M317M missile have been virtually doubled and, naturally, ballistic and cruise missile engagement capabilities have been considerably increased," Bely added.
