The newest Russian armoured vehicles, namely, T-14 Armata main battle tanks (MBT), T-15 BMP Armata and Kurganets-25 tracked infantry fighting vehicles (IFV), and Bumerang (Boomerang) wheeled IFVs will get advanced SPZ 'soft-kill' optoelectronic systems, according to the Izvestia newspaper.

"The SPZ jammer detects laser beams and inbound anti-tank guided missiles [ATGM] and fires smoke grenades to disguise the vehicle in infrared and visual spectrums. The system has been developed by the Elektromashina enterprise [a subsidiary of the Uralvagonzavod research-production corporation]. At present, the newest system is being trialed. The test program will have been accomplished by the year-end. In 2017, the company is planning to launch the trials of the SPZ jamming device integrated with the newest Russian armoured vehicles," a source in the defense industry told Izvestia. An official representative of the Uralvagonzavod corporation confirmed the trials of SPZ. A source in the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) told Izvestia that the SPZ system could defeat even state-of-the-art ATGMs, such as the 3rd generation FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile developed by Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. "The smoke screen made by SPZ will cover the vehicle, protecting it against even Javelin ATGMs," he said. |
