A recent picture releases on the Russian website BMPD Live Journal shows a Russian-made ZSU-23-4 Shilka of Syrian army fitted with an armour cage. According some military sources, the combat vehicles have been upgraded to be protected during urban combat operations. The hull of the Syrian ZSU-23-4 self-propelled anti-aircraft gun is covered at the front, rear and on each side with an armour cage which seems to be designed and fitted locally. The lower part of this armour is fitted with with closely spaced chains with ball ends. This system is also used on the Israeli Merkava tanks family that are fitted with closely spaced chains with ball ends around the lower part of the turret bustle. This has been designed to detonate HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-Tank) projectiles before they can hit the turret ring. The turret is also protected on 360° with that type of armour but with any protection on the roof. Today the RPG-7 rocket propelled grenade is one of the most popular weapon used by everyone from African nations to terrorist groups in every major conflict in Middle East. The armour cage also know as slat armour, bar armour, standoff armour is designed to protect combat vehicles against anti-tank rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) attacks. In Iraq, Slat armor proved quite successful in defeating attacks of High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) of Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPGs). This type of armor is not effective Attacks by high explosive and fragmentation RPG rounds which explode before they hit the cage. Syrian army uses a similar type of armour to increase the protection of the T-72 main battle tank. As the ZSU-23-4, the armour cage is fitted around the hull and the turret. |
