An assault rifle is a selective-fire rifle that uses an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine. Assault rifles were first put into mass production and accepted into widespread service during World War II. Currently, the assault rifle is the standard individual weapon for soldiers.

By strict definition, a firearm must have the following characteristics to be considered an assault rifle:

- It must be an individual weapon;
- It must be capable of selective fire, which means it has the capacity to switch between semi-automatic and burst/fully automatic fire;
- It must have an intermediate-power cartridge: more power than a pistol but less than a standard rifle or battle rifle. For full-power automatic rifles, see List of battle rifles;
- Its ammunition must be supplied from a detachable box magazine;
- It should have an effective range of at least 300 meters.

QBZ 95 Norinco most modern assault rifle China Chinese firearams defense industry 925 001
China QBZ-91

China - Norinco - QBZ-91 / QBZ-17 / QBZ-19 – 2019

During the Chinese army military parade that was held in Beijing on October 1, 2019, China has unveiled a new assault rifle which is developed by the No. 208 Research Institute of China Ordnance Industries, the developer of the QBZ-95 rifle, according to the China Central Television (CCTV).

According to the Fire Arms Blog, the new rifle is named "QBZ-191", the design is similar to a standard carbine/assault rifle. This is a new way for the Chinese armed forces using the QBZ-95B, a bullpup-style assault rifle designed and manufactured by Norinco.

The rifle is highly reliable, feels comfortable to operate, shoots with very high accuracy and has less recoil, Li Xiang, a test marksman at the research institute, told CCTV, noting that the ergonomics of the weapon can better fit the battlefield. According to our first analysis, the new Chinese assault rifle showcased at the Chinese military parade seems to be a conventional gas-operated short-stroke piston assault rifle. The new rifle has been designed in three variants, a carbine version with a 10.5 ″ barrel, an assault rifle with a 14.5″ barrel and there is also a longer barreled marksman rifle, some pictures were released on Twitter.

The design is very similar to modern assault rifles designed in Europe and the United States with a full-length Picatinny rail on the top. The top of the weapon is also fitted with a new optic which seems very similar to red dot sight. Thanks to the optical design the red dot follows the movement of the user’s eye while remaining fixed on target, eliminating any need for centering. It has also a 4-position telescoping stock that can be folded. According to Chinese sources, the new rifle is chambered in the standard 5.8x42mm caliber using a new type of rounds that have better performance on medium to long-range. It has an effective firing range of 300 m for the carbine version and 400 m for the assault rifle version with a rate of fire of 750 rpm (Rounds Per Minute).

U.S. - Colt - M5 – 2017

The American small arms manufacturer Colt unveils its new M5 Enhanced Carbine 5.56mm caliber in October 2017 at BIDEC 2017, the Bahrain International Defense Exhibition and Conference. Currently, the new Colt M5 Carbine is available in three barrel length configurations. The M5 is available in three barrel configuration, 10.3”, 11.5” and 14.5”.

The Colt M5 Enhanced Carbine has a low profile gas block in a carbine length gas system and a free float modular rail system, maximizing rail real estate, comfort, weight and accuracy, while at the same time, maintaining the same lethality and accuracy expected from a Colt.

The Colt M5 uses a conventional short-stroke tappet piston where a two-piece piston/ operating rod strikes the face of the bolt carrier group driving it rearward and the piston rod returns to its forward position by a spring. The barrel itself has had some redesign work on it as well though still utilizing the standard M4 feed ramps on the barrel extension. There are modifications of the chamber area of the barrel and the changes further ventilate gas and helps with air circulation by drawing heat out of the receiver and out the handguards.

It fires from a closed bolt and has a short-stroke pushrod piston system.

The SIG516 has a safety lever on the left side, to be used by the thumb of the shooting hand. All SIG516 models except the Marksman are equipped with 16-inch barrels shrouded by a free-floating M1913 Picatinny rail, as well as flip-up iron sights (BUIS) made by SIG Sauer. The 5.56×45mm NATO SIG516 models accept AR-15 style box magazines. These magazines are constructed in 5-, 10-, 20-, and 30-round variants. SIG516 Russian rifles must use a different magazine, as they are chambered in 7.62×39mm. The SIG516 Russian uses magazines designed for 7.62×39mm AR-15 style rifles.

ARX160 A3 most modern assault rifle Beretta Italy Italian firearams defense industry 925 001
Italy Beretta ARX160A3

Italy - Beretta - ARX160A3 – 2008

The Beretta ARX160 is a modular assault rifle manufactured by the Italian Company Beretta. Developed for the Italian Armed Forces as part of the Soldato Futuro (English: "Future Soldier") program, the ARX160 was launched in 2008 as a commercial weapon system independent from the Soldato Futuro ensemble, complete with a companion single-shot 40×46mm NATO low-velocity grenade launcher, called the GLX160, which can be mounted underneath the rifle or used with an ad hoc stock system as a stand-alone weapon.

The ARX160 is built to be durable and super-tough, being constructed of superior steel and technopolymer. Its flip-up sights are just like those on the full-caliber rifle—super-light but rugged, and featuring a rear diopter for quick and accurate target acquisition. Maintenance is easy thanks to the simple way in which it comes apart and is reassembled without any tools. Whether you use it on its own as a rimfire tactical rifle, or as a training tool to improve your handling of the full-power counterpart, the ARX160 will always turn heads at the range and will never let you down.

The Beretta ARX160 A3 is an improved variant of the ARX160 which features some design changes. The changes include a redesigned handguard, where its top row air vent slits have been replaced with larger square cut-outs, though the bottom row air vent still retains the thinner slits. These larger cut-outs reduce some weight of the rifle while letting more air to circulate around the barrel. It features an improved pistol-grip design and a barrel length of 11- and 16-inch

South Korea Daewoo K11

South Korea - Daewoo - K11- 2006

The K11 is a multi-weapon resembling the earlier US Objective Individual Combat Weapon in concept, design and operation. This weapon is designed and manufactured by S&T Daewoo of South Korea. It consists of two separate weapons combined into a single unit: a lower assault rifle chambered to fire 5.56×45mm NATO rounds and an upper 20×30mm (caliber of shell x length of propellent case) grenade launcher firing both conventional and air-bursting "smart" grenades, along with its integrated digital sighting unit.

Equipped with a laser range-finder as well as a ballistic computer, the K11 allows the operator to quickly find the distance to a target and launch an airburst shell. The shell will then detonate a few meters away from the target.[14] An electronic scope is integrated on the K11; it can be linked to a goggle system with a digital display. The display can be used during the nighttime with thermal imaging and shows the range information from the laser range-finder. The weapon is compatible with standard 20- or 30-round 5.56×45mm NATO magazines, and can hold 6-round magazines of 20 mm shells at one time.
