Russian armored vehicle manufacturer Uralvagonzavod is developing an articulated armored personnel carrier (APC) featuring a high cross-country ability. The APC is designed for the infantry brigades in the Russian Arctic, Vyacheslav Khalitov, deputy CEO for special equipment, Uralvagonzavod, told journalists on Monday, October 12, 2015.

Uralvagonzavod is developing a prototype of the future APC designated as Arctica. The APC is expected to be highly capable of cross-country movement in the high latitudes and of negotiating marshy terrain. The advanced APC will be fielded with the Arctic-stationed brigades in the first place.
"Articulated means two elements are linked: one is where the powerplant and driver’s compartments are and the other where the troop compartment or weapons systems are," Khalitov said. At Russia Arms Expo 2015, Uralvagonzavod has presented its DT-10PM and DT-3PM, two articulated APC armoured personnel carrier. These vehicles were especially designed to operate in harsh cold conditions. Khalitov also said Uralvagonzavod personnel had begun to robotize the standard-issue T-90 main battle tank. The operator is to be able to control the tank remotely at a distance of 5 km. As was reported in the press, Russian locomotive manufacturer Muromteplovoz is testing the Toros MTLBu family of tracked vehicles designed for use by the Arctic brigades and Northern Fleet’s coastal defense units. |
