The incident took place in the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Gulf of Oman to the Persian Gulf. The 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, embarked on the amphibious assault ship Boxer, parked a L-MADIS (Light Marine Air Defense Integrated System) jammer on the Boxer’s flight deck. The L-MADIS uses a combination of electronic jammers, radars and gun systems to defend against UAVs.

L-MADIS is a counter unmanned aerial system (counter-UAS) weapon composed of two Polaris MRZR: a command vehicle and a jamming vehicle. This is the first known kill by a new generation of electronic warfare and directed energy weapons developed by the United States.
