Analysis: Russian Navy Odintsovo corvette to undergo Arctic trials

The Odintsovo Karakurt-class corvette of project 22800 will be tested in the Arctic. It will train combat missions in a harsh climate. Experts believe the corvettes of the class are most fit for operations in the White and Barents Seas but have to be tested there first, the Izvestia daily writes.

The Odintsovo is to operate in the 1st battalion of the 36th brigade of missile boats of the Baltic fleet. Its warships are based in Baltiisk in Kaliningrad region. The Mytishchi and the Sovetsk first corvettes of the project are operating there.

Project 22800 corvettes comprise the biggest series of warships supplied to the Navy. 18 corvettes have been ordered. They are to be equally shared by the Pacific, Baltic and Black Sea fleets.

The corvettes are built with stealth technologies and armed with modern combat controls, detection, guidance and communication systems. They carry a 76.2mm AK-176MA artillery gun. Kalibr missiles are the main weapon. The corvettes can also be armed with supersonic anti-ship Onix missiles.

They carry Orlan-10 drone with a range of 120 kilometres. It is used as an air scout and pointer. The drones make the corvettes practically invisible, as they do not have to switch on the radars which can be detected by the adversary, the Izvestia said.
