Description
The SA-13 GOPHER or 9K35 Strela-10 is a short-range SAM (Surface-to-Air) system. The SA-13 is designed to defend troops on the march from low-altitude aircraft and helicopters, precision-guided munitions, and reconnaissance RPVs (Remotely Piloted Vehicles). The combat assets of the system consist of the 9A34 and 9A35 combat vehicles and 9M37 anti-aircraft missiles. Technological assets include a test station, technological maintenance equipment, operator´s simulator, a dummy missile (a weight equivalent of the real missile), a training missile, and an operator´s checking device. The MT-LB light armored tracked vehicle provides the entire system with excellent cross-country capabilities.
SA-13 Gopher 9K35 Strela-10 main variants:
- 9A35M2: launcher vehicle with 9S16 (NATO `Flat Box-B') passive radar detection system that gives a 360º azimuth and minimum 40º elevation coverage
- 9A34M2: launcher vehicle
- 9M37: missile, the latest version is 9M37MD; 9M333
Technical Data
Armament |
Four missiles are mounted on the turret in boxes, ready to launch, and eight more are carried inside the vehicle as reloads. Reloading takes around 3 minutes. The launcher pedestal mounted to the rear of the center of the vehicle is 360º traversable. It incorporates the operator’s position behind a large, rectangular window at its base. The SA-13 GOPHER [ZRK-BD Strela-10] is a short-range, low altitude SAM system. The SA-13 missile (9M37) is 2.2 m long, 0.12 m in diameter with a 0.4 m wingspan and has a maximum speed of Mach 2. It carries a 5 kg HE warhead and is fitted with either an improved passive lead sulfide all-aspect infra-red seeker unit, or a cryogenically cooled passive all-aspect infra-red seeker unit. The maximum speed of the missile is near Mach 2, engagement range is from 500 to 5000 m (0.3–3 miles) and engagement altitude is between 10 and 3500 m (33-11,500 ft). For its self-protection, a 7,62 mm machine gun is mounted to the hatch of the commander position.

Design and protection |
The SA-13 is based to the hull of the multi-purpose tracked armored vehicle MT-LB. The hull of the MT-LB is all-welded steel armor with the crew compartment at the front, the engine immediately behind the crew compartment on the left side and the troop compartment at the rear of the hull. The all-welded steel armor provides the occupants with protection from small arms fire and shell splinters.

The SA-13 is motorized with a YaMZ 238 V, V-8 cylinder diesel developing 240 hp at 2,100 rpm coupled to a manual gearbox with 6 forward and 1 reverse gears. The torsion bar suspension on either side consists of six road wheels with the drive sprocket at the front and the idler at the rear |
Accessories |
The SA-13 is fully amphibious being propelled in the water by its tracks. The HAT BOX circular parabolic radar antenna is located between the two pairs of missile canisters and is a simple range-only set to prevent wastage of missiles outside the effective range of the system. |
