BMPT BMP-T Terminator 1

Tank Fire Support Tracked Armored Vehicle - Russia

BMPT Terminator 1 tank fire support tracked armored vehicle Russia 925 001

Description

The BMP-T/BMPT also nicknamed Terminator 1 is a fire support vehicle designed and manufactured by the Russian main battle tanks (MBT) manufacturer Uralvagonzavod. The vehicle was presented for the first time to the public in 2008 during the Russian Expo Arms exhibition in Nizhny Tagil, Russia. A small number of vehicles were delivered to the Russian Ground Forces for evaluation beginning in 2005. The BMP-T fire support vehicle is used to provide fire support to tank and motorized riflemen units and to detect and eliminate low-observable and scattered targets (primarily, enemy manpower equipped with small arms and anti-tank weapons) on the battlefield. It features an armament suite that allows destructing of heavy-protected platforms (tanks and tank-based vehicles), fortifications, and aerial targets. However, the detection of low-observable targets and their well-timed elimination are the primary tasks set before the BMP-T fire support vehicle. BMPT can be used in tank formations or separately. A tank unit equipped with BMP-Ts features advanced efficiency, as the enemy`s well-protected vehicles and fortifications are destroyed by MBTs, while manpower, anti-tank-systems, and soft-skin vehicles by BMP-Ts. The separate usage of fire support vehicles envisages dismounted troops' combat efficiency-boosting, conveys securing and escorting, and eliminating of terrorists. The BMP-T`s crew composition and its disposal in the vehicle, observing and sighting systems, and the armament suite provides well-timed detection and elimination of targets on the move in poor visibility conditions by day and night. The vehicle can quickly detect and eliminate three different targets in simultaneous mode, owing to three operators. The commander manages the targeting process and he can conduct firing in dual control mode also.

Variants:

- BMPT-72: In September 2013, Uralvagonzavod unveiled the latest armored fighting vehicle at the Russian Arms Expo 2013 exhibition in Nizhny Tagil, Russia. The layout of the chassis is similar, but the BMPT-72 is fitted with a new turret. The two automatic grenade launchers fitted on the previous version are removed.
- BMPT Model 2017: This version is based on the tracked chassis of the BMPT presented in 2008 but fitted with armament mounted on the BMPT-72.

Technical Data

Armament
The main armament of the BMP-T model 2008 consists of a weapon station, which is mounted on the top of the hull that is armed with two 30 mm 2A42 cannons and one 7.62 mm PKTM machine gun mounted above the cannons. Fitted on either side of the turret are two missile launchers for the Ataka anti-tank guided missile. The missile has a maximum range of 5,800 m and can be fitted with various types of warheads including tandem high explosive anti-tank, thermobaric and continuous rod high explosive. The BMP-T is also armed with two 30 mm AGS-17 automatic grenade launchers. The turret traverse is electrically powered through 360º with weapon elevation from -5 to +45º. Five electrically-operated 81mm grenade launchers model 902A are mounted on each side of the turret in the hull section.
Design and protection
The BMP-T model 2008 is based on the chassis of the well-known T-72 MBT which is used in large numbers by the Russian Army and has been manufactured under license by many countries. The BMP-T has a crew of five with the driver seated at the front of the vehicle in the center. To the left and right of the driver's position is a seat for the 30 mm grenade operator and the commander and gunner are located in the turret. The protection of the BMPT is superior to most MBTs, as active and passive protection is used, and additional armor (the vehicle lacks a turret), is distributed to the hull of the vehicle. The vehicle features an advanced protection suite that shields the crew from anti-tank munitions. BMPT has tank-level basic armor. Its front part is not weakened by a firing port intended for a tank gun. The sides of the vehicle are additionally protected by explosive reactive armor. The BMPT`s protection suite actually exceeds the tank`s one. The rear part of the vehicle features bar-slat armor.
Mobility
The power pack of the BMP-T, mounted at the rear, consists of a B92C2 four-stroke multifuel diesel with liquid cooling and supercharging, which develops 1,000 hp, and gives the vehicle a power-to-weight ratio of 21.2 hp/tonne. The BMP-T uses the same chassis as the main battle tank T-72, the torsion bar suspension on each side consists of six road wheels with the idler at the front, a drive sprocket at the rear, and three return rollers supporting the inside of the track only. The vehicle can cross a ditch of 2.6-2.8 m, a wall of 0.85 m, and a water obstacle with a depth of 1.2 m.
Accessories
Standard equipment of the BMPT-T includes an NBC protection system, a 5 kW diesel generator, which is mounted in an armored compartment on the right side of the hull and automatic two-shot fire detection and suppression system. The vehicle`s fire control system is based on a multichannel sight (which incorporates optical and thermal imaging channels) and a panoramic low-profile thermal imaging sight allowing the gunner and commander to detect and identify small-sized targets at long distances by day and night and in harsh climatic conditions. The BMPT is also equipped with a laser detection system.
