The ATOM is a wheeled modular infantry fighting vehicle jointly developed by the Russian Defense Company and the French Company Renault Trucks Defense (RTD). The ATOM was unveiled for the first time during the defense exhibition RAE 2013 (Russian Arms Expo) in Nizhny Tagil, Russia. With this new vehicle, the Defense Industry of Russia would like to develop new combat vehicle able to rival with armoured vehicles manufactured in Europe and United States. The ATOM has been designed to cover the full spectrum of combat missions in the modern battlefield. The common chassis can be used to offer a wide range of combat vehicles as troop carriers, command vehicles, combat electronic vehicle, combat engineering and recovery, and fire support platforms, mounting various weapon systems. This 30-tonne combat vehicle incorporates all the experience of UralVagonZavod in the area of armoured hulls and armaments. UVZ is the world-famous builder of the Russian T-90 main battle tank. RTD, the French mobility specialist (VBCI, VAB, Sherpa), is supplying the power train for this 8x8 designed to offer all-terrain mobility equivalent to that of a tracked vehicle. The two companies have worked together to propose the most open, evolutionary architecture. Cooperation between RTD and UralVagonZavod was launched in February 2013 at the last edition of the IDEX exhibit in the United Arab Emirates. Today this partnership has resulted in this initial project, which aims to replace the BTR-80s in service in the Russian Army.

Armament |
The first version of the ATOM was fitted with a remote-controlled weapon station armed with one 57mm BM-57 automatic cannon which is a modification of the Soviet 57 mm S-60, developed by the company Petrel. The weapon station can traverse 360° and has an elevation of +70º and a depression of -8º. The 57mm cannon has a maximum range of 6 km and can fire at a maximum rate of 120-140 rounds/min. The 57 mm cannon can be used against light armoured and soft targets, aerial targets (UAVs), precision-guided munitions, aircraft and helicopters. The vehicle carries a total of 180-200 rounds with 100 rounds ready to fire. A 7.62mm coaxial machine gun is mounted to the right side of the main armament. According Uralvagonzavod, the ATOM can be fitted with a cannon up to 120 mm.

Design and protection |
The layout of the ATOM has the power pack front right, driver front left and the whole of the remainder of the hull rear being left free for the troop compartment. It has a crew of three including driver, commander and gunner and can carry 8 soldiers. The driver is provided with a single-piece hatch cover that opens to the left with three day periscopes at te front. Another hatch for the vehicle commander is just behind the driver position. The troops compartment is fitted with 8 anti-mine seats, with the troops being seated down either side facing inwards. They enter and leave the ATOM by a large power-operated ramp in the hull rear that opens downwards and which is also provided with an emergency door in the center. The top of the hull has four roof hatches. The ATOM has an internal volume of 10.7 m³ and a maximum combat weight of 32 tons. The hull of the ATOM is of all-welded steel construction with modular armour plates that provides the occupants with protection from small arms fire and shell splinters. The ATOM can provide ballistic protection up to level 5 (STANAG 4569) 25mm APDS-T ammunition at 500 meters. To increase protection, the ATOM can be fitted with slat armour.
