Thunder 2 Cambli 4x4 tactical armored truck
Description
The Thunder 2 is a 4x4 tactical armoured truck designed, developed and manufactured by the Canadian Company Cambli Group. The vehicle was launched in November 2015 using a new design for the security requirements and to be used in desert conditions in the Middle-East and Africa. The Thunder was unveiled in the Middle East during the Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition & Conference which was held in Qatar from the 29 to 31 March 2016. During SOFEX 2016, a defense exhibition in Jordan, the Thunder 2 has demonstrated its all-terrain capabilities during a live demonstration. The Cambli Thunder 2 is a new generation of armoured vehicle personnel carrier which can be used by security or military forces offering high mobility, protection and comfort for the crew and able to perform a full range of missions. The Thunder 2 was tried and tested in 60°C temperatures, the triple AC (Air Conditioning) system kept inside temperatures around 20°C. According Cambli management team, the Company is in the final stages to sign contracts with several Middle East countries. Since April 2019, the Thunder 2 is in service with the Calgary Police of Canada.

- The Thunder 2 is also available in 6x6 variant, APC, command post, ambulance and wrecker versions. There is also a one door version which can carried from 16 to 18 people.

Armament |
The Cambli Thunder 2 tactical armoured truck is fitted with an open top turret including individual seat, sunroof and a standard weapon NATO mount which can be armed with a machine gun up to 12.7mm caliber. The manual turret is protected by armour plates on 360°. There is small bullet proof windows on each side and a firing port is available at the rear of the turret which can be used by a sniper or a marksman.

Design and protection |
The Thunder 2 is divided in three main compartments with the driver and co-driver at the front, the commander and gunner in the middle and troops compartment at the rear with seven seats. Each side of the hull is also equipped with three small bulletproof window with firing port in the bottom. This vehicle offers a large inside volume space to provide comfort and safety for troops. The vehicle can carry a total of 12 people including driver, commander, gunner. The hull and all windows of the Thunder 2 provides a ballistic protection B7 level, against firing of small arms 7.62mm using armour piercing bullets and and has a V-shaped blast protection hull. Two large bulletproof windows are fitted on the front and either side of the hull offering wide angle of view for the driver and commander. The troops compartment is also fitted on each side with three small bulletproof windows with firing port below. The engine compartment at the front is fully shiled. The radiator is protected by a grille offering a B7 armour protection with chicanes inside to prevent bullets reach the engine. The vehicle is also adapted for tactical intervention with side steps on each part of the hull offering the possibility to carry 10 people. The rear part of the hull is equipped with two large doors which opens outwards each fitted with small bulletproof window and firing port. Other interesting features of the vehicle is the use of an manual retractable step at the rear. The bottom part of the chassis is equipped with a retractable hydraulic armour plates which can be deployed by driver to protect police officer or soldiers in case of fire under the vehicle or to evacuate wounded people under protection.

Mobility |
The Cambli Thunder 2 is based on a COTS Platform (Commercial Off The Shelf) using the chassis of a Kenworth T-370 4x4 truck chassis coupled to an Allison Automatic transmission 3000 RDS with 5 speed. This platform can withstand the weight of the vehicle and the front and rear axles together have a capacity of 20,000 kg. The Thunder 2 has a curb weight of 15,350 kg with a maximum payload of 2,818 kg. The wheel package includes Michelin XZL- 2 395/85R20 tyre , Hutchinson jantes, CTIS (Central Tire Inflation System) and run flat system. The Thunder 2 can reach a maximum road speed of 120 km/h. |
Accessories |
The Cambli Thunder 2 is fitted with an hydraulic package mounted at the front of the vehicle which includes a 6m battering ram which can be used to move obstacles, forcing a door, or to push heavy objects. with an elevation from -20° to 70°. The front of the chassis is also fitted with a 7,500 kg self-recovery winch. The vehicle is equipped with three totally independent extreme A/C (Air Conditioning) cooling systems, tested at the highest desert temperatures of 60°C. Front at the commander seat, there is a large screen for situational awareness connected to four cameras. At the front of the driver position, there is three small monitors connected to four cameras mounted on each side an the rear of the vehicle including night vision capability. The vehicle includes also a Golight thermal imager system with a FLIR camera. |
