2S23 Nona-SVK
2S23 Nona-SVK
120mm wheeled 8x8 self-propelled mortar carrier
Description
The 2S23 also named Nona-SVK is a Russian-made wheeled self-propelled mortar carrier. The 2S23 was first revealed at a defense exhibition in Asia in late 1990 when a complete system was displayed for the first time. According to Russian sources, the 2S23 entered service with its land forces in 1990. The 120mm 2S23 Nona-SVK battalion-level self-propelled gun (SPG) is designed for use against enemy troops, armament, and military equipment. Its armor protection, cross-country mobility and maneuverability are identical to the wheeled armored personnel carrier BTR-80. The 2S23 Nona-SVK is capable of applying aimed fire both from direct and indirect laying positions with mortar bombs and standard artillery shells. In addition to standard artillery rounds, the gun fires all types of mortar shells designed for use by foreign-made 120mm mortars
2S23 Nona-SVK variants:
- 2S23 Nona-SVK: BTR-80-based chassis mounting a 2A60 mortar, a variant of the 2A50.
- 2B16 Nona-K: A towed version. Fitted with a muzzle brake.
Technical Data
Armament |
The 2S23 self-propelled artillery mount comprises a 120mm caliber turret-mounted gun carried by a wheeled chassis of the BTR-80 armored personnel carrier. The 120mm semi-automatic breechloaded rifled gun is arranged in an all-welded steel turret. the mortar gun is loaded manually. The ammunition rack is not mechanized. The 120mm mortar has a maximum firing range of 8.8 km with standard ammunition, and up to 12.8 km when using rocket-assisted projectiles. The firing distance for mines is around 7 km, with the main gun having the capability to maintain a continuous fire of up to 30 rounds. the main mortar can also fire laser-guided Kitolov-2 artillery projectiles. These projectiles can eliminate targets up to 9 km away with impressive precision, thereby augmenting the system's overall firepower. The second armament includes one 7.62 mm machine gun mounted on the turret roof, and a range of three smoke dischargers mounted on each side of the turret.

Design and protection |
The 2S23 is based on a modified BTR-80 (8 × 8) Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) chassis with the mortar turret mounted over the forward part of the hull. The 2S23 does have a number of differences including the removal of all firing ports and their associated vision devices, the removal of the side doors between the second and third road wheels, different roof hatches, and the removal of the commander's roof-mounted infra-red searchlight. The hull of the 2S23 is of all-welded steel armor construction that provides protection over the frontal arc from 12.7 mm armor-piercing rounds at a distance of 1,000 m with the remainder of the vehicle providing protection against 7.62 mm armor-piercing rounds. The 2s23 has a crew of 4.
|
Mobility |
The 8x8 chassis of the 2S23 is similar to the armored personnel carrier BTR-80. The 2S23 nona-SVK is motorized with a V-8 KamAZ-7403 water-cooled diesel developing 260 hp coupled with a manual transmission with 5 forward and 1 reverse speeds. |
Combat Equipment |
The 2S23 Nona-SVK is fully amphibious. On the water, it is propelled by two waterjets. The 2S23 Nona-SVK may also be used by Russian naval infantry units. The standard equipment of 2S23 Nona-SVK includes an NBC protection system and night vision equipment. The onboard mortar system possesses the versatility to function in both direct and indirect firing modes. The vehicle's ammunition rack can be manually controlled. |
