Electronic warfare vehicle and radio communication jammer - Russia

Infauna K1Sh1 UNSh 12 electronic warfare armored vehicle jamming communication Russia 925 001

Description

The Infauna is a Russian-made electronic warfare system used as a radio communication jammer. The vehicle is based on a modified chassis of the BTR-80 wheeled armored personnel carrier named K1Sh1 (GAZ-59039). The development of the Infauna began in 2005 and was completed in 2009. Russia has completed the factory test in 2009 and the first production of the vehicle started in 2010. In 2011 the first vehicle was ready to deliver to the Russian army. In January 2012, four vehicles Infauna were delivered to the Russian airborne units of electronic warfare. There is no foreign equivalent of the “Infauna”. This vehicle uses unique technology features which can significantly improve the protection of troops, armored vehicles, combat personnel against land mines and improvised explosive devices, and provide enemy communications jamming. The Infauna is used in the Ukraine conflict to jam VHF and UHF radios, and GSM communication systems.

Technical Data

Jamming Equipment
The Infauna is a multifunctional electronic reconnaissance and jamming system. Equipment of the electronic warfare vehicle includes the traditional tools of electronic warfare systems for jamming and communication management, and also optoelectronic equipment. The turret of the standard BTR-80 is removed to be replaced by a big antenna which is used for jamming.
Design and protection
The Infauna electronic warfare communication complex vehicle is based on a modified chassis of the wheeled armored vehicle personnel carrier BTR-80 named K1SH1 (version UNSh-12). The turret of the standard BTR-80 is removed to be replaced by a big antenna which is used for jamming. The middle part of the hull is larger and higher than the standard BTR-80 to accommodate equipment and military personnel. The front of the hull has four hatches, and a single door is mounted to each side center of the hull. The hull provides protection against small arms firing and shell splinters. The standard equipment of Infauna includes an NBC (Nuclear Bacteriologic and Chemical) protection system and night vision. The vehicle has a crew of eight.
Mobility
As the standard BTR-80, the Infauna is motorized with a YaMZ-238M2 V-8 turbocharged diesel engine developing 240 hp coupled to a manual transmission with 5 forward and 1 reverse gears. The vehicle can run at a maximum road speed of 80 km/h with a maximum range of 600 km.
Combat use
The main tasks of the Infauna vehicle are the protection of road, combat vehicles and personnel against radio-controlled mines and explosive devices, and providing jamming against radio communication systems of the enemy at the battalion level. The Infauna can produce aerosol interference which is used for protection against high precision weapons with laser and video-management systems. The alleged multifunctionality entails, in addition to the capability to jam radio-controlled IEDs, radio communication and optical jamming in order to protect soldiers, military equipment and objects from guided weapons equipped with video or laser homing.
