Description
The Enigma is an 8x8 armoured vehicle platform developed and designed by the Emirates Defense Technology (EDT). This vehicle has been developed for a response to a need of the United Arab Emirates armed forces for a new wheeled combat armoured vehicle. A prototype of the Enigma 8x8 armoured vehicle was unveiled in February 2015 at the International Defense Exhibition in Abu Dhabi, IDEX. The vehicle was presented in IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) configuration fitted with a Russian-made BMP-3 IFV turret. At IDEX 2015, EDT has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Russian Defense Company UralVagonZavod to supply weapon systems for integration on the Enigma 8x8 armoured vehicle platform. The Enigma 8x8 has been designed to provide high-levels of protection, heavy weapons systems, amphibious capabilities, an unrivaled spacious interior that can accommodate 11 personnel, all without compromising the 28-ton vehicle’s mobility. EDT, which financed the vehicle’s production, plans to send the Enigma prototype for summer trials with the UAE military, after which it will start manufacturing the vehicle in the Musaffah industrial area. The trials of the Enigma 8x8 armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) developed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and equipped with Russian AU-220M Baikal combat module will be started in 2017, according Uralvagonzavod`s Deputy Director for Military-Technocal Cooperation, Igor Kulikov.

Variants:
Enigma is designed to be compatible with a variety of weapon systems, which makes the Armored Modular Fighting Vehicle (AMFV) suitable to armed forces around the world. This includes the Self Propelled M777 variant, which provides a high mobility Howitzer solution, due to the lightweight titanium gun built by BAE Systems. Enigma also provides solutions for different air defense applications - including the Rheinmetall Sky Ranger 35 mm turret.

Armament
The Enigma 8x8 armoured vehicle showed at IDEX 2015 was fitted with a Russian-made BMP-3 two-man turret armed with one 100 mm 2A70 gun, one 30 mm 2A72 coaxial cannon and a 7.62 mm PKT coaxial machine gun. The armament is stabilized in two planes via the 2E52 electromechanical system. The 100 mm 2A70 gun can fire 3UOF17 and 3OF32 high-explosive fragmentation rounds at a rate of 8 to 10 rds/min at a maximum range of 4,000 m, or the 3UBK-10-3 with the 9M117 (Code name AT-10 Stabber) laser-guided missiles which has a range of 5,500m. The dual-feed 30 mm 2A72 cannon can engage armoured vehicles at ranges of 1,500 to 2,000 m and helicopters out to 4,000 m. The weapon system is fitted with a fire control system ensuring effective engagement of ground and aerial targets day and night at static position and on the move. The FCS comprises SOZH main gunner's sight, gunner and commander's air defence sights, TKN-AI commander's vision device, an armament stabilizer and a ballistic computer. The BMP-3 turret can be equipped with Vesna-K thermal imaging sight and Eagle Eye commander's panoramic thermal imaging sight at customer's request. The SOZH and Eagle Eye sights are fitted with laser range finders. Three smoke grenade dischargers are mounted at the front on each side of the turret. To increase its self-protection the BMP-3 turret can be equipped with the Shtora-1 protection system designed to disrupt the laser target designation, or Arena-E defensive aids suite against ATGM (Anti-tank Guided Missile)

Design and protection
The hull of the Enigma 8x8 armoured is of all-welded steel armour construction with add-on armour for a higher level of ballistic protection and a full length high hardness steel bottom V-hull for blast protection. The armour of the vehicle provides ballistic protection up to level IV A (front arc withstands hits from 30-mm armor-piercing rounds and all-round protection is against 14.5-mm armor-piercing rounds) and mine protection up to level IV B. The roof vehicle has been designed to offer high level of modularity able to receive a wide range of weapon systems. The driver position is located at the front of the hull with the powerpack to his right. The turret is mounted to the center of the hull and the rear part of the vehicle can accommodated 8 troops. All the seats for the infantrymen features five-point seat belts and all seats are suspended from the roof to offer higher protection against blast of mine explosion. The infantry enter and leave the vehicle through a large hydraulically operated ramp at the rear of the hull, which has an integral door in the center. There is also two hatches at the rear part of the troops roof compartment.

Mobility
The Enigma 8x8 armoured vehicle is motorized with an Caterpillar C13 diesel developing 711hp, coupled to a Caterpillar automatic transmission and a two-speed transfer case. The vehicles uses an 8x8 chassis using a Timoney Technology suspension to provide high level of cross-country mobility. The suspension is mounted on three sub-frames for ease of replacement of damaged units in the event of mine or improvised explosive device damage. The Enigma can run at a maximum speed of 120 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 400 km.
Accessories
Standard equipment of the Enigma 8x8 armoured vehicle includes an air-conditioning system, battle management system, cameras for situational awareness, and electronic architecture. The Enigma 8x8 armoured vehicle is fully amphibious and propelled in the water by two propellers mounted at the rear of the chassis.
