Eitan 8x8 APC
Wheeled Armored Personnel Carrier vehicle - Israel
Description
The Eitan is an Israeli-made 8x8 armored vehicle personnel carrier that was unveiled on August 2016 by the Israeli Ministry of Defense. The vehicle is designed to replace the old fleet of M113 tracked armored personnel carriers in service with the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) for many years. The Eitan is being developed by the Ministry of Defense Tank Administration in cooperation with the IDF Ground Forces. The vehicle was developed following of the lessons learned during the Gaza war Operation Protective Edge in 2014. It's a new vehicle based on scratch offering a new configurable multirole platform. The Eitan is a new generation of wheeled combat vehicle which offers high mobility and firepower. According to the Israeli Ministry of Defense, the Eitan is one of the world's most advanced and protected wheeled combat vehicle. The vehicle will be ready for serial production in 2018 with an annual production rate of several dozen systems. In August 2019, Israeli Company Elbit Systems announced that following a competitive bid, the Israeli Ministry of Defense (IMOD) selected Iron Fist Light Decoupled (IFLD), the Company’s Active Protection System (APS), for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Eitan new eight-wheeled Armored Fighting Vehicle (AFV). On December 28, 2022, the Israeli Ministry of Defense announced that the hull of the Eitan will be manufactured by the American company Oshkosh Defense. In an announcement on May 28, 2023, made through a video published by the Israeli Ministry of Defense on Twitter, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Nahal Infantry Brigade took delivery of their first batch of Eitan - the new 8x8 Armored Personnel Carrier vehicles.

Design and protection |
The layout of the Eitan 8x8 armored personnel carrier is similar to a standard modern wheeled armored vehicle with the driver and engine at the front, a combat module in the middle, and the troop's compartment at the rear. The Eitan can carry a total of 12 military personnel including a commander, driver, gunner, and 9 infantrymen with a weight from 30,000 to 35,000 kg. The hull of the Eitan uses a combination of armor protection systems including a passive armor module at the front and sides. The floor of the vehicle offers a high level of protection against the blast effects of mines and IEDs ( Improvised Explosive Devices). The infantry enters and leaves the vehicle through a small hydraulically operated ramp at the rear of the hull.

Mobility |
The Eitan 8x8 armored personnel carrier is motorized with a 750-horsepower engine. It can run at a maximum road speed of 90 km/h. The vehicle uses an 8x8 driveline configuration. The tires of the vehicle are fitted with a run-flat system designed to resist the effects of deflation when punctured and to enable the vehicle to continue to be driven at reduced speeds (under 50 km/h), and for a limited range (up to 16 km), depending on the type of tire. |
Combat equipment |
To increase its protection, the Eitan 8x8 armored personnel carrier is fitted with the Iron Fist Light Decoupled (IFLD) Active Protection System (APS) from the Israeli Company Elbit Systems. The Trophy neutralizes all types of Chemical Energy threats in flight, addressing them in four major stages: Threat detection, threat tracking, Hard Kill countermeasure activation, and threat neutralization. |
