Description
The KN-02 is a mobile launch short-range ground-to-ground ballistic missile system designed and manufactured by the North Korea defense industry. This system seems to be based on the Russian-made vehicle OTR-21 Tochka with the NATO name of SS-21 Scarab. The missile was tested for the first time in April 2004. The first serial production of the system has started in 2006, and the vehicle enters in service with the South Korean army in 2008. The KN-02 was unveiled for the first time to the public during a military parade in 2007. In May 2013, South Korea has announced that Noth Korea has launched three missiles KN-02. This missile is believed to be the most accurate of North Korea’s missile arsenal.

Launcher unit
The KN-02 is based on a 6x6 truck, which is also the launcher station. This vehicle has a maximum road speed of 60 km/h. During transport, the missile is enclosed with the warhead in a temperature-controlled casing. The crew compartment is in the forward section and the missile compartment behind. The vehicle can be ready for launch in 16 minutes, can launch a missile in 2 minutes and it can be reloaded in 20 minutes.
Missile
According to some open sources information from the Internet, the solid-fueled missile KN-02 has a length of 6.4m, 0.65 diameter and have a launch weight of around 2,000 kg. It can carry a payload of 485 kg holding HE warheads and could be also equipped with a nuclear, chemical or biological warhead. The missile has an estimated range from 100 to 120 km.
Guidance system
The guidance system is inertial with an optical correlation system in the terminal phase, a combination that probably yields an accuracy near 100 m CEP.
Combat use
The missile can be used for precise strikes on enemy tactical targets, such as control posts, bridges, storage facilities, troop concentrations and airfields.
