Bell Helicopter has been awarded a $170,173,188 contract for the manufacture and delivery of nine AH-1Z Viper combat helicopters, and nine auxiliary fuel kits for the government of Pakistan under the Foreign Military Sales program, the US Department of Defense announced on its website on April 4, 2016.

Work is expected to be completed in September 2018. The US Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Maryland, is the contracting activity, the US DoD added.

Pakistan requested the purchase of 15 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters and 1000 AGM-114R Hellfire II Missiles as well as associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support for an estimated cost of $952 million in April 2015, through the US Foreign Military Sale program.

The Bell AH-1Z Viper is a twin-engine attack helicopter based on the AH-1W SuperCobra, originally developed for the United States Marine Corps. The AH-1Z was declared combat-ready in September 2010.

The AH-1Z incorporates new rotor technology with upgraded military avionics, weapons systems, and electro-optical sensors in an integrated weapons platform. It has improved survivability and can find targets at longer ranges and attack them with precision weapons.
