TsAGI completed trials of VRT500 rotors.

The Zhukovsky Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) together with VR-Technologies Design Bureau of the Russian Helicopters Holding held the second stage of aerodynamic trials of the lifting rotor of the light coaxial VRT500 helicopter, TsAGI said.

"The research of a full-scale model of the lifting rotor with hingeless blade fixture was carried out in the biggest subsonic wind tunnel in Europe of TsAGI. The institute studied the behavior of the model at a speed of up to 136 km/h. The collective angle varied in the whole functional range. Lateral and crosswise channel controls were simultaneously engaged. The results were recorded uninterruptedly, including the impact on the whole model and three sections of a blade," it said.

The experiment confirmed the calculated aerodynamic and aeroelastic characteristics of the lifting rotor and blades. The results will help specify the characteristics of the craft. "VRT-500 trials were successful and very interesting. Firstly, a full-scale model was tested. Secondly, we operated a lifting rotor with elastic blade fixture. It is a scarcely studied topic in Russia which was used only with Ansat helicopter. The experiment was vital for TsAGI to develop research of similar lifting rotor schemes," head of the TsAGI aerodynamic aircraft angle of attack office Oleg Kirillov said.

VRT500 is a light single engine helicopter with coaxial rotors and a takeoff weight of 1600 kg. It has the biggest cargo and passenger cabin in its class and can carry five people. The rotorcraft is equipped with modern avionics. Its characteristics provide a speed of 250 km/h to a range of 860 km. It can carry a payload of 730 kg. The helicopter is offered in passenger, multirole, cargo, training, VIP, and medical-evacuation options.
