TsAGI designs new low-noise acoustic wind tunnel for aircraft industry.
The Zhukovsky Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) designed a unique low-noise acoustic wind tunnel, the institute said.

It is distinguished by a big size. Usual acoustic tunnels are small, as it is difficult to unite the qualities of a large-size wind tunnel and an echo-free chamber in a single unit. The new tunnel has three air intakes: external one of 2.5 meters in diameter and two internal ones for hot air which models high-speed coaxial streams of modern engines. The tunnel ensures acoustic tests of hot double-contoured streams in close proximity to the aircraft glider, of large-scale models of air propellers, chassis, mechanized wings, screens, etc.
"The whole aircraft industry is interested in the project, as now it has to request foreign partners to hold such trials," TsAGI air acoustics department head, PhD Physics Viktor Kopyev said.
TsAGI and the Chinese Aerodynamic Research and Development Center (CARDC) launched a project in 2018 to study the flow noise of large-scale chassis models. "It is a new interesting interaction example. Joint initiatives give TsAGI access to an experimental base which Russia does not have so far. CARDC has recently built a unique large-scale echo-free chamber tunnel. Russian and Chinese experts will test a topic chassis model and pay specific attention to the scale economy, i.e. the impact of the size on the results of air acoustic tests. Our scientists will test a similar model in TsAGI echo-free chamber," he said.
