"The servicemen were vested with a task to monitor the airspace by using the Sopka-2 track radar system deployed on Wrangel Island. They had to detect a pair of flying craft with the help of radar-eluding technologies," VVO said.

The radar crews discovered the flying craft and established their location as soon as they had entered the airspace in the area of VVO’s responsibility. The tactical situation was maximum close to operation in a combat regime. The aircraft flew at high speed and moved along complicated trajectories. The radar experts tracked the aircraft upon identification and handed over the positioning data to a command post, which was supposed to direct interceptor jets at the targets.

Besides, the radar experts received, summarized and processed information on the air situation in the Arctic zone, which is under VVO’s control.
