The initial pair of UH-60M Black Hawks were delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base at Richmond in late July, with a third helicopter arriving on August 4, 2023. These three helicopters are destined for deployment within the 6th Aviation Regiment of the Army at Holsworthy, New South Wales. A spokesperson from the Ministry of Defence stated, "The first two of the 40 UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters intended for the Australian Army were successfully delivered to RAAF Base Richmond on July 30 as planned. A third UH-60M Black Hawk landed on Friday, August 4, also via the US Air Force C-17."
The Black Hawk traces its origins to the Sikorsky S-70 model, which was developed in the 1970s. It wasn't until 1979 that the Black Hawk was officially introduced into the ranks of military aviation. Since then, it has continuously evolved to meet the changing needs of modern military operations. The UH-60M helicopter is the latest version of this lineage, benefiting from significant improvements compared to its predecessors.
The role of the Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk as a utility helicopter is hard to overstate. Its modular design allows it to be adapted for a variety of missions, ranging from troop transport to medical evacuation, refueling, and logistical support. Its ability to operate in a multitude of conditions, including challenging and hostile environments, makes it a preferred choice for armed forces around the world.
The Black Hawk is powered by two turboshaft engines, providing it with excellent power and maneuverability. Its transport capacity varies depending on the configuration, accommodating up to 11 passengers in addition to the crew. It can also be equipped with defensive weapons to ensure its safety in conflict zones.
The Black Hawk has spawned several variants, including the Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk, the Sikorsky HH-60 Pave Hawk, and the Sikorsky MH-60 Jayhawk. These derivatives have found specific uses, ranging from anti-submarine warfare to combat search and rescue.
Initially scheduled for delivery in June, the first batch of helicopters experienced slight delays, but the remaining 38 are set to be delivered to the Army over the coming months. These first helicopters are expected to be stationed at Oakey with the 5th Aviation Regiment and at Holsworthy with the 6th Aviation Regiment, bolstered by the support of Australian industry contractors. Lockheed Martin Australia, under the banner of Sikorsky Australia, has been providing maintenance and support to the Black Hawk and Seahawk helicopter fleets of the Australian Defence Force for over three decades.
