Burkina Faso and Mali's A-29 Super Tucano aircraft arrive in Niger amid tensions with ECOWAS.

According to a tweet from OSINT defender dated August 20, 2023, light attack A-29 "Super Tucano" aircraft from the air forces of Burkina Faso and Mali have landed in Niger. This move is seen as a strategic decision to bolster Niger's defenses against a potential military intervention by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

In terms of aerial firepower, the combined strength of Burkina Faso and Mali appears modest. Together, they possess only seven A-29 Super Tucano aircraft and about fifteen older attack aircraft. In contrast, the Nigerian Air Force boasts a more formidable fleet. With 12 A-29s, 11 "Alpha Jet" light attack jets, 9 F-7 fighters, and 3 JF-17 "Thunder" multi-role fighter aircraft, Nigeria's aerial capabilities are notably superior.

The disparity in airpower raises questions about the strategic implications of this deployment. Even if the combined forces of Burkina Faso and Mali do not match Nigeria's in numbers, their decision to send aircraft to Niger sends a clear political message of solidarity and regional alliance.

The A-29 "Super Tucano" is designed for light attack and counter-insurgency operations. This aircraft has become a crucial asset for many air forces globally, especially in regions grappling with internal conflicts and insurgencies.

The A-29 Super Tucano has its origins in Brazil. Manufactured by Embraer Defense and Security, one of Brazil's leading aerospace companies, the Super Tucano stands as a testament to Brazil's prowess in aircraft design and production. The aircraft took its maiden flight on June 2, 1999, marking the beginning of a new era in light attack aviation. By 2003, the Super Tucano was introduced to the global stage, showcasing its advanced features.

The Super Tucano is an evolution, developed from the Embraer EMB 312 Tucano. Since its introduction in 2003, the aircraft has been in continuous production. Primarily designed as a light attack and counter-insurgency aircraft, the A-29 Super Tucano is equipped to handle a range of missions.

Diplomatic efforts continue, but member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) are not in agreement. Following the coup, ECOWAS imposed sanctions on Niamey and urged the junta to restore constitutional order by August 7, or face potential military intervention. With the ultimatum unheeded, ECOWAS has repeatedly threatened to take action, as seen last week during a meeting of its member states' chiefs of staff. "The day of intervention has been set," ECOWAS announced on August 18.
