The sale includes additional services as part of an existing Foreign Military Sales (FMS) arrangement with Iraq, which was below the congressional notification threshold of $28 million. This initial agreement included CLS and the support of a Bell Field Service Representative (FSR).
The latest authorization expands the scope to include combined CLS and FSR maintenance support for a range of Bell aircraft. This includes three 407 models—the 206B3, the OH-58A/A Kiowa, and the Huey II—as well as the 505 model.
The Bell helicopter is an aviation icon, known for its versatility and reliability. Founded by Larry Bell in 1935, Bell Helicopter began producing helicopters after World War II. Over the years, Bell has developed a range of helicopters that have served in various capacities, from military operations to emergency services, and personal to commercial transport.
The Bell 206B3 JetRanger is one of the most common helicopters in the world. Initially designed for military use, it has gained immense popularity in the civilian sector. The 206B3 has a turbine engine that provides superior reliability and performance, especially in hot and high conditions like those in Iraq. Its cabin can accommodate up to four passengers and is often used for tasks such as training, surveillance, and light transport.
The OH-58A Kiowa, a militarized variant of the 206, was extensively used by the U.S. Army as an armed reconnaissance helicopter. It features specialized equipment for reconnaissance, surveillance, and targeting. The Kiowa can be equipped with various armaments, including machine guns and anti-tank missiles, making it suitable for close air support missions. Its ability to operate at low altitudes and perform complex maneuvers makes it particularly useful in combat environments.
The Bell Huey II is a modern update of the famous UH-1H Huey. This improved version offers better flight performance and increased payload capacity. With a more powerful engine and enhanced flight dynamics, the Huey II is capable of transporting more troops or equipment and is often used for troop transport missions, medical evacuation, and logistical support. Its robustness and ease of maintenance make it a reliable choice for operations in challenging environments.
According to the DSCA, the purpose of this sale is to strengthen Iraq's homeland defense capabilities, equipping it to confront current and future security challenges better.
