US agrees the delivery of Cutting-Edge AMRAAM Air-to-Air Missiles to Sweden.

The US Department of State announced on July 7, 2023, that it has given its approval for a potential foreign military sale to the Swedish government involving Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) and related equipment, with an estimated value of $605 million.

The Swedish government's purchase request includes up to 250 AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) and up to 6 AMRAAM C-8 guidance sections. The AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles are widely recognized as leading air-to-air munitions, offering superior performance and high precision.

AMRAAM missiles are active radar-guided air-to-air missiles designed for use by modern fighter aircraft. They provide extended medium-range capability, high speed, and exceptional maneuverability. The AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles are equipped with an active radar guidance system, enabling them to track and intercept aerial targets at significant distances.

The provided AMRAAM C-8 guidance sections in this sale allow for the upgrade of existing AIM-120C-8 missiles, enhancing their capabilities and precision. This upgrade will ensure that Sweden has modern and suitable air-to-air munitions to address current and future threats.

In addition to the missiles and guidance sections, this sale also includes support equipment and items such as spare parts, consumables, accessories, encryption devices, and telemetry kits for AMRAAM missile testing. Technical, engineering, and logistical support services will also be provided by the US government and contractors to assist Sweden in integrating and maintaining these munitions.

This acquisition will enhance Sweden's ability to address current and future threats in the region by providing modern and high-performing air-to-air munitions. Furthermore, it will strengthen the already high interoperability between the Swedish Air Force, US Joint Forces, and other regional and NATO forces. According to authorities, the integration of these equipment and services within the Swedish armed forces will pose no difficulties.

The main contractor for this transaction will be Raytheon Missiles and Defense, based in Tucson, Arizona. The AIM-120 missiles and AMRAAM C-8 guidance sections are developed and manufactured by Raytheon Missiles and Defense, a renowned company in the field of missile and defense systems.
