Angola Welcomes First Airbus C295 Transport Aircraft.
On July 30, 2024, the Spanish newspaper Info Defensa reported that the National Air Force of Angola (FAN) has made a significant step in modernizing its fleet with the reception of the first Airbus C295 aircraft, marking the beginning of a new era for Angolan military aviation. This acquisition is part of an order for three aircraft placed in April 2022 with Airbus Defence and Space.

The aircraft, photographed in Gando, Gran Canaria, by Antonio Rodríguez Santana, is part of a plan to replace the old Soviet-designed aircraft currently used by the FAN. The C295, a tactical transport aircraft, has been specially configured to meet the diverse and complex requirements of military and humanitarian missions in Angola.
The model received, registered T-412, is equipped for troop transport, parachuting, and cargo dropping operations, with the ability to operate on unpaved runways, a crucial feature for African environments. "This new capability represents a significant improvement in our logistics and emergency response," said a senior FAN official, who preferred to remain anonymous.
The other two aircraft, configured as maritime surveillance aircraft, will arrive in the coming months. These C295s will be equipped with Airbus's Fully Integrated Tactical System (FITS) and the latest generation sensors, significantly enhancing the FAN's capabilities in search and rescue, illegal fishing surveillance, and intelligence.
The avionics suite of these aircraft includes the latest version of Collins Aerospace Pro Line Fusion, ensuring maximum mission integration and efficiency. The C295 is a leader in its segment, known for its versatility and its capacity to transport up to nine tons of cargo or up to 71 passengers.
The transition from Soviet aircraft to Airbus models represents not only a technological upgrade but also a shift to more reliable and economically maintainable equipment. With this update, Angola positions itself advantageously to face regional challenges and peace missions under the auspices of the United Nations.
By replacing the old Antonovs with the modern C295s, the FAN not only improves its operational capabilities but also strengthens its ties with Western manufacturers, diversifying its military supply sources and reducing its dependence on Russian equipment.
With the arrival of the first C295, Angola resolutely embarks on a path that should strengthen national and regional security while optimizing responses to humanitarian crises and natural disasters. The impact of this modernization will be felt well beyond the borders of the FAN, contributing to increased stability in the region.
