Konsberg presents Nomads Close air defense system to be where NASAMS can't.
Konsberg announced the launch of the National Air Defense System for Maneuver (NOMADS), a highly mobile ground-based air defense system designed to protect army maneuver units near the front line from increasingly complex aerial threats. NOMADS was developed for the Norwegian army and is tailor-made to meet current and future challenges.

The system consists of a SHORAD (Short Range Air Defense) module mounted on a high-mobility all-terrain armored vehicle. This module integrates the main command and control functions and applications of the medium-range NASAMS system and includes a passive seeker missile and an AESA radar. The system is capable of detecting and intercepting drones, cruise missiles, helicopters, and aircraft.
In addition to its armor, NOMADS is equipped with a remote weapon station (RWS) for self-protection. The system operates independently of the vehicle.
Kjetil Reiten Myhra, Executive Vice President of Defense Systems at Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, stated that NOMADS can defend against small, short-range targets such as drones and cruise missiles, thus offering unique protection against threats similar to those currently seen in Ukraine. Its configuration is designed for rapid movement over rough terrain with unprecedented response time.
The NOMADS project is a collaboration between KONGSBERG, the Norwegian Armed Forces, and the Norwegian Defense Material Agency. NOMADS units tested and delivered to the end user in Norway have received excellent feedback.
Kongsberg is known for the NASAMS system, which is developed jointly with Raytheon. The NASAMS (National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System) is a medium-range air defense system that has been operational since 1994. It is designed to protect airspace against various threats such as aircraft, helicopters, and drones. It uses the AIM-120 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile), which is also used by fighter jets. This system stands out for its flexibility and ability to integrate with other existing radar and command systems, providing extensive defensive coverage and rapid response capability. NASAMS is deployed on various platforms, including mobile vehicles, allowing for rapid relocation and adaptation to different combat environments. It has been adopted by numerous countries around the world, including the United States and several NATO member countries.
A unique system, NOMADS is custom-designed to protect maneuvering armed forces, transport routes, command centers, and logistical areas in a dynamic ground combat environment. The mobility, maneuverability, firepower, and high level of protection of the system meet the standards of mechanized units, for which NOMADS is designed to provide air defense coverage.
Additionally, the air defense capability with command and control (C2), radar with IFF, and missiles are combined on a single platform. This allows for autonomous air defense operations with NOMADS both day and night.NOMADS is optimized for maximum efficiency on the battlefield, typically networked and integrated into NATO's Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD). The system can be easily adapted to any mission or NATO-compatible ground-based air defense (GBAD) unit.
The advanced and user-friendly command and control system can prioritize threats and launch multiple missiles at different targets simultaneously. For now, this system has not been deployed in operations, but it holds significant promise for addressing short-range responses, which are unmanageable for NASAMS.
