The upgrade, named the M-346 Block 20 standard, extends beyond the aircraft itself to include the entire training system, including ground facilities. The system will now feature large screens in the cockpit, replacing the traditional multi-functional displays, and introduce a new low-profile head-up display as well as advanced navigation and weapon management systems. Notably, the aircraft will also be equipped with an augmented reality helmet-mounted display and an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar for the M-346 F variant, which is tailored for light combat roles.

These enhancements leverage the inherent growth potential designed into the M-346, validated by a decade of operational use with leading air forces worldwide. The improvements are part of Leonardo's commitment to digital transformation, reflecting its long-term strategy to incorporate more digital solutions powered by artificial intelligence into its systems.

The Ground Based Training System (GBTS) associated with the M-346 will also see improvements, with new virtual reality support and AI applications designed to provide comprehensive training from multimedia classroom courses to flight and mission simulation. The updated GBTS aims to offer a more immersive training environment that closely mimics real-world operations.

Additionally, digitization efforts extend to technical support services through the implementation of virtual maintenance and the "connected fleet" infrastructure. This system utilizes advanced data analytics and high-performance computing to enhance Integrated Logistic Support services, aiming to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of maintenance operations.

Lorenzo Mariani, Co-General Manager of Leonardo, emphasized the importance of training systems in preparing pilots for complex aerial challenges. The updated M-346 is positioned as a key component in Leonardo's portfolio to meet the training and operational needs of modern air forces. Marco Zoff, Managing Director of Leonardo Aircraft, also highlighted the continuous enhancements made to the M-346, affirming the company's commitment to maintaining the platform's relevance in technological advancements and training capabilities.

With more than 100 aircraft delivered to several world-leading operators and over 120,000 flight hours logged in operational service, the M-346 has proven to be a versatile system for both training and light combat roles. The new Block 20 enhancements are expected to further solidify its position in the market, meeting the evolving needs for cost-effective and advanced combat training operations.
