To facilitate this, MBDA will establish a final assembly line and a service centre dedicated to Brimstone 3 at its Schrobenhausen site. This initiative represents the first production line for Brimstone missiles outside the United Kingdom, underscoring the collaborative model within MBDA that ensures the sovereign supply of critical European defence assets.
Eric Béranger, Chief Executive Officer of MBDA, highlighted the strategic importance of this procurement: "The procurement of Brimstone 3 by Germany is a decisive contribution to the harmonisation of armaments in Europe and the Bundeswehr's ammunition stockpile. The new production line is the first of its kind outside the UK and demonstrates the value of the MBDA cooperation model in ensuring the sovereign supply of critical European defence capabilities."
The Brimstone 3 air-launched ground attack missile boasts several advanced technical features that enhance its performance in precision strike missions. It is designed to deliver high precision, capable of accurately hitting both stationary and fast-moving targets across all weather conditions and various operational environments. The missile is equipped with a dual-mode seeker, combining millimeter-wave radar and semi-active laser guidance, which provides flexible targeting options and increases reliability in hitting intended targets.
Additionally, Brimstone 3 features a high-explosive, shaped charge warhead optimized for defeating a wide range of targets, including armored vehicles and fortified positions. Its enhanced propulsion, powered by a solid rocket motor, offers an extended range and higher speed, enhancing its ability to engage targets from a safe distance. Moreover, Brimstone 3 can be integrated into network-centric warfare systems, allowing for real-time target updates and coordination with other battlefield assets.
Integration of Brimstone 3 with the Eurofighter Typhoon provides significant tactical advantages. The missile fits seamlessly into the Eurofighter’s existing weapon systems, requiring minimal modifications to the aircraft. This integration enhances the Eurofighter's strike capability, allowing it to engage various target types with high precision. The missile supports multimode operations, enabling the Eurofighter to quickly switch between different mission profiles, such as air-to-ground and air-to-air engagements.
The missile is also being integrated into unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) like the Eurodrone and MQ-9B, further enhancing their strike capabilities. This integration allows UAVs to conduct precision strikes remotely, reducing the risk to human operators and providing tactical flexibility. With advanced targeting systems, drones equipped with Brimstone 3 can autonomously identify and engage targets, increasing operational efficiency.
The tactical advantages of Brimstone 3 are substantial. Its pinpoint accuracy ensures a high success rate in hitting targets, minimizing collateral damage and increasing mission effectiveness. The missile’s versatility allows it to engage a wide range of targets, including moving vehicles, fortified structures, and high-value assets. Its all-weather capability ensures consistent performance regardless of environmental challenges, and it can operate effectively in both day and night conditions, providing operational flexibility and ensuring mission success under various conditions.
This development not only strengthens Germany's defence capabilities but also exemplifies the growing cooperation and integration within the European defence industry, fostering a more unified and self-reliant European defence strategy.
