US Approves Military Sale to Netherlands for CH-47 and AH-64 Helicopter Training.

On August 19, 2024, the U.S. State Department approved a potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to the Netherlands, valued at approximately $305 million. This sale is focused on training for CH-47 and AH-64 helicopters, as well as related equipment. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has officially notified Congress of this development.

The Dutch government has expressed interest in acquiring a comprehensive training package to support its fleet of CH-47 Chinook and AH-64 Apache helicopters. This package includes training ammunition, Army Supply Class I-VI and VIII-X items, IT equipment, ground components, as well as various parts and accessories. Additionally, the sale includes service support related to the Installation Management Command (IMCOM), assistance from U.S. Government personnel and contractors, and other logistical and program support elements.

The Netherlands conducts its helicopter training activities at Fort Cavazos, Texas, where the 302nd Squadron of the Royal Netherlands Air Force is stationed. This training is essential for maintaining the operational readiness of the Netherlands, including their participation in the AMERICAN FALCON exercise—a key certification event that prepares Dutch military units for deployment, often in support of U.S.-led coalition missions abroad.

The CH-47 Chinook is a heavy-lift transport helicopter with a tandem rotor configuration used by the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF). This model is particularly valued for its ability to transport heavy and bulky loads over long distances. The CH-47F, the latest version in service with the Dutch forces, is equipped with Honeywell T55-GA-714A engines, each providing 4,733 horsepower, allowing for a maximum speed of approximately 315 km/h. It has an internal capacity to carry 33 soldiers or up to 10,886 kg of cargo, with the option to transport external loads using a triple-hook system. The helicopter is also equipped with advanced digital avionics, GPS navigation systems, and a cockpit fully compatible with night vision goggles (NVG), making the CH-47F operational both day and night and in challenging weather conditions. Used for logistics transport missions, medical evacuation, and special operations support, the Chinook plays a crucial role in the air mobility capabilities of the Dutch armed forces.

The AH-64 Apache is a versatile attack helicopter used by the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF). Specifically, the AH-64D Apache Longbow is designed for missions such as close air support, anti-tank warfare, and armed reconnaissance. It is powered by two General Electric T700-GE-701C engines, each providing 1,890 horsepower, allowing for a maximum speed of 293 km/h. The AH-64D is equipped with an AN/APG-78 Longbow fire control radar, capable of detecting and targeting multiple threats simultaneously, even in low-visibility conditions. The Apache's primary armament includes a 30mm M230 chain gun, Hydra 70 rockets, and laser-guided AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, offering high precision for strikes against armored and fortified targets. Additionally, the AH-64 cockpit is fully compatible with night vision goggles (NVG), and the helicopter is equipped with countermeasure systems to protect against enemy threats. The Apache plays a critical role in the Dutch forces' aerial combat capabilities, providing superior firepower and tactical mobility on the battlefield.
