Citing information from the Internet and Social Networks, the Fennek 4x4 reconnaissance armored vehicle spotted in Ukraine could come from the Netherlands. To date, no information has been officially released by the Dutch government regarding the delivery of this type of vehicle to the Ukrainian armed forces.

On December 23, 2022, the government of the Netherlands announced that in 2023 the Netherlands will make €2.5 billion available to support Ukraine. The Dutch government expects that this amount will be necessary to provide military aid, support essential repair and reconstruction activities and contribute financially to efforts to fight Russian troops.

In the coming year, Ukraine will continue to need considerable international support. Russia’s war in Ukraine is still ongoing and has turned into a war of attrition. Ukraine’s armed forces continue fighting every day for the freedom, security and prosperity of their country, and thus for that of Europe as a whole. The Dutch government’s decision to earmark funding now sends a clear message of undiminished solidarity with the people of Ukraine, who can count on predictable Dutch support for as long as it takes.

In terms of combat vehicles, the Dutch government has already supplied to Ukraine 8 PzH 2000 155mm self-propelled howitzer, 45 T-72EA tanks in collaboration with the Czech Republic, an undisclosed number of YPR-765 tracked APCs (Armored Personnel Carriers), light tactical vehicles, military trucks, and a Patriot battery.

The Fennek is a 4x4 wheeled reconnaissance armored vehicle jointly produced by the German company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Dutch Defence Vehicle Systems. The first pre-series prototype was completed in late-1992 and was used for extensive company trials. in 2011, the Dutch Army ordered 410 vehicles including 202 reconnaissance, 130 MRAT medium-range antitank and 78 general-purpose versions and the German army ordered 222 vehicles including 178 reconnaissance, 24 combat engineers, and 20 joint fire support teams (JFST) variants.

The Fennek has a very unique design with the drive position located at the front of the crew compartment with excellent vision to his front via three large bulletproof windows. The convenient arrangement of the windscreen and side windows and a seat positioned far forward provide the driver with an excellent field of view of more than 180°. In reconnaissance configuration, the rear part of the vehicle accommodates seats for the commander and radio operator/ observer.

The hull of the Fennek allows flexible armor protection concepts and is typical of all-welded aluminum armor with additional armor modules providing protection from 7.62 mm AP small arms fire and shell splinters.

The reconnaissance variant of the Fennek is fitted with an electrically operated gun mount, which can be armed with a 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine gun or a 40 mm grenade launcher. The sighting system is derived from the PERI Z17, which is already in service in large numbers. As an option, the periscope can be upgraded with additional plug-in modules, for example, an image intensifier. The gun mount can be traversed through a full 360º with elevation from -10 to +40º. When fitted with a 7.62 mm machine gun, a total of 250 rounds of ready-use ammunition are carried or 32 rounds when fitted with a 40 mm grenade launcher.

The Fennek is powered by a Deutz BF6M 2013C 6-cylinder turbocharged inter-cooled diesel engine developing 240 hp coupled to an automatic transmission with six speeds with torque converter and lock up. It can run at a top road speed of 112 km/h and 23 km/h in reverse mode. It has a cruising range of 1,000 km and 460 km in off-road conditions.
