On January 7, 2025, Allison Transmission announced an $80.6 million contract to support the Abrams Main Battle Tank program for 2025. The contract involves supplying upgraded and new X1100 cross-drive transmissions for the latest Abrams tank variants used by the U.S. Army and Foreign Military Sales (FMS) customers.
Under this contract, Allison Transmission will support the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center (JSMC) in Lima, Ohio, where new Abrams tanks are produced. Additionally, kits purchased by the Integrated Logistics Support Center (ILSC) will assist in overhaul and repair activities at the Anniston Army Depot.
Dana Pittard, Vice President of Defense Programs at Allison Transmission, expressed the company’s pride in continuing its collaboration with the U.S. Army and international allies. "We are honored to continue our involvement in the Abrams tank program, marking an important milestone in our ongoing multiyear agreement. Our commitment to delivering excellence and long-term support remains steadfast," Pittard stated.
The contract covers both transmission repair kits and the delivery of new, upgraded transmissions configured to meet the latest specifications. These transmissions will be delivered with zero miles on critical components, offering substantial savings compared to entirely new units. In addition, Allison Transmission will provide essential technical support to maintain the necessary technical data packages and plans.
The Abrams are a family of main battle tanks (MBT) developed by the United States, primarily used by the U.S. Army and several foreign armed forces. The most well-known model is the M1 Abrams, which was introduced in the 1980s. It is distinguished by its firepower, advanced protection, and mobility. The tank is equipped with a 120mm smoothbore gun, composite armor, and a gas turbine engine, providing high speed and excellent maneuverability across various terrains. Over the years, it has been upgraded through several versions, including the M1A1 and M1A2, with improvements in communication systems, targeting, and protection. The Abrams plays a crucial role in modern conflicts, offering both offensive and defensive support to ground forces.
Deliveries under this contract are expected to take place throughout 2025, further strengthening the operational readiness of the U.S. Army’s Abrams tanks and enhancing overall support for allied nations.
