DEFEA 2025: T-AB 1A Armenian Multicaliber Bullpup Rifle Combining Mobility Firepower and Tactical Ergonomics.

On the occasion of the DEFEA 2025 exhibition held in Athens from May 6 to 8, the Armenian company Maktes Arms presents for the first time its new T-AB 1A bullpup assault rifle. This weapon is developed to meet the requirements of modern conflicts by integrating modularity, compactness, and multicaliber compatibility. This official launch is accompanied by the exhibition of the semi-automatic T-AB 2A rifle, already known, which offers a flexible solution for precision shooting. Through these two models, Maktes Arms demonstrates its capacity to design light weapon systems adapted to varied operational environments and compliant with NATO standards.

The T-AB 1A stands out with its bullpup configuration, which places the action and magazine behind the pistol grip, allowing the weapon to retain a standard-length barrel within a more compact overall form. This architecture provides a clear advantage in close-quarters engagements or urban environments while maintaining the ballistic performance expected of an assault rifle. It operates using a short-stroke gas piston system with a rotating bolt and can be converted to fire 5.56x45mm NATO, 5.45x39mm, or 7.62x39mm rounds, thanks to interchangeable bolt and magazine assemblies. This modularity enables users to switch between ammunition standards without altering the core platform, thereby improving logistical flexibility and compatibility with existing stockpiles.

The T-AB 1A accepts either STANAG (AR15/M4) or AK-type magazines, depending on the configuration and features ambidextrous controls, a reversible charging handle, an adjustable stock, and a quick-detach barrel that requires no tools. It is capable of both semi-automatic and automatic fire, with a rate of fire between 600 and 700 rounds per minute, and an estimated accuracy of 4 MOA. The rifle’s length ranges from 720 to 760 mm, with a weight of 3.75 kg.

Although not being introduced, the T-AB 2A complements the product line by offering a platform dedicated to semi-automatic precision fire. Its conventional layout (non-bullpup) and compatibility with intermediate to full-power calibers—such as 7.62x51mm NATO, 6.5mm Creedmoor, and .308 Winchester—make it suitable for designated marksmen and special forces. It shares the same gas-operated mechanism with a rotating bolt and incorporates a foldable and adjustable stock, tool-free barrel removal, and fully ambidextrous controls.

The receiver is made of chrome-lined stainless steel, and the handguard, available in polymer or aluminum, features integrated Picatinny rails for mounting optical or tactical accessories. It delivers an estimated accuracy of 2 MOA and includes a trigger adjustable from 1.5 to 3 kg. The rifle’s overall length varies between 1015 and 1075 mm depending on barrel length (457 mm or 508 mm), with a total weight of 4.5 kg.

These two weapon platforms reflect distinct tactical approaches. The T-AB 1A is intended for units engaged in dynamic operations, especially in urban settings or vehicle-borne scenarios, where compactness and responsiveness are priorities. In contrast, the T-AB 2A addresses the need for medium- to long-range precision fire and is compatible with modern precision ammunition and advanced optics. Both rifles adopt a modular philosophy, feature tool-free disassembly, ambidextrous ergonomics, and compatibility with AR15/M4-standard components.

With this dual presentation, Maktes Arms reinforces its position within Armenia’s developing defense industry. The official unveiling of the T-AB 1A at DEFEA 2025 marks a significant step for the company as it seeks to enter the international market for light firearms. By integrating proven mechanisms with tactical features suited for current operational demands, Maktes Arms aims to address the expectations of various institutional users, including conventional armed forces, special units, and governmental clients in need of reliable, adaptable, NATO-compatible platforms.
