According to Mr. Erko Sepri, Strategic Category Manager (Vehicles, Machinery & Logistics) at the ECDI, this latest acquisition represents a major step forward for the capabilities of the Estonian Defence Forces. “These vehicles are a strategic investment that boosts our mobility and operational readiness. The technology and features of these trucks ensure that our units have the necessary tools to carry out their missions in all circumstances,” Sepri stated.
The new Volvo 44R and 66R trucks are designed to withstand harsh climates and rugged terrain. They can be adapted to transport equipment and personnel or equipped for various missions. Their modern safety technologies and driver assistance systems provide extra protection and ease of use while adhering to civilian logistics standards for simpler, more cost-effective maintenance.
Major Raigo Puusepp, Chief Technician of the Estonian Defence Forces, underscores the strategic importance of these trucks’ reliability and versatility. “Tactical trucks are essential for transporting personnel and equipment, especially given the often challenging nature of our terrain. Our current fleet has been in service for nearly 50 years and needs to be replaced. The arrival of these new vehicles will not only improve technical reliability but also help boost unit morale.”
Beyond the purely material aspect, this renewal of tactical vehicles is part of a broader effort to strengthen Estonia’s defence capabilities in a region where collective security and inter-allied cooperation are paramount. With continuous modernization of their equipment and the integration of cutting-edge technologies, the Estonian Defence Forces aim to better respond to the challenges posed by rugged terrain and extreme weather conditions and ensure optimal cooperation with their regional and international partners. This upgrade underscores Estonia’s commitment to maintaining a robust defence force, ready to intervene swiftly and effectively in a variety of scenarios while contributing to the stability and security of the Baltic region.
Over the coming year, the Estonian Defence Forces will receive logistical and tactical trucks as part of a broader modernization effort. In addition to Volvo Defence, Scania Eesti and Veho Eesti will also provide vehicles under the framework agreement, which extends to other organisations such as the Defence League, the Police and Border Guard, and institutions under the Latvian Ministry of Defence. This comprehensive approach to renewing and expanding the tactical transport fleet underscores Estonia’s commitment to modernizing its defence capabilities and maintaining a high level of preparedness for a wide range of operational scenarios.
