Exclusive: Lithuania Strengthens Defense Industry with CV90 Armored Vehicles Production for Baltic Countries.

Lithuania will take on a key role in the regional production of CV90 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) under a new procurement initiative shared with several Nordic and Baltic countries. Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas confirmed that about 30 percent of the CV90s ordered by Sweden, Lithuania, Norway, and Finland will be assembled in Lithuania, involving local businesses in the supply chain. The announcement was made during an interview aired on the television program Info Diena, broadcast by Info TV, and reported by the Lithuanian news outlet "15min" on April 25, 2025.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Paluckas explained that the preliminary agreement outlines Lithuania’s involvement not only in the procurement but also in the supply chain of the CV90 tracked armored vehicles. This strategic move is expected to bolster Lithuania’s defense industry, create new jobs, and promote technological advancement through direct engagement with major defense manufacturers. The decision underscores Lithuania's commitment to expanding its industrial base and strengthening its role in regional security efforts.

The broader context of this cooperation was highlighted a few days earlier when Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced on April 22, 2025, that Sweden, Lithuania, Norway, and Finland are considering a joint purchase of several hundred CV90 infantry fighting vehicles. Manufactured by a Sweden-based subsidiary of Britain’s BAE Systems — Europe’s largest defense contractor — the CV90 IFV is recognized for its advanced mobility, survivability, and firepower. The potential joint procurement marks a significant step in enhancing regional military collaboration at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions in Europe.

Lithuania’s participation in the assembly process is seen as a strategic economic and political decision. Defense policymakers, including Dovilė Šakalienė, have expressed strong support for integrating Lithuanian businesses into the project. By securing a role in the assembly and supply chain, Lithuania will not only benefit economically but will also establish itself as a key defense partner in Northern Europe.

The CV90 has proven itself as one of the most capable infantry fighting vehicles on the market. Developed by BAE Systems Hägglunds, the CV90 combines exceptional mobility, strong armor protection, and cutting-edge technologies. It can be equipped with various weapon systems, including a 35mm or 40mm autocannon, anti-tank guided missiles, and advanced digital battlefield management systems. The vehicle’s modular design allows it to adapt to multiple operational roles, including mechanized infantry, reconnaissance, command and control, and engineering tasks. Its design emphasizes high survivability, excellent off-road capabilities, and enhanced situational awareness, making it an ideal choice for modern armed forces.

Currently, the CV90 is operated by several countries across the world, including Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Estonia. In recent years, Slovakia and the Czech Republic have joined the group of CV90 users, further reinforcing its reputation as a trusted platform for modern armies. In December 2023, Slovakia signed a major contract valued at approximately €1.3 billion for the acquisition of 152 CV90 MkIV vehicles. Earlier, in May 2023, the Czech Republic finalized a significant deal worth around $2.2 billion to procure 246 CV90 MkIV vehicles. These contracts not only demonstrate the continued demand for the CV90 but also highlight its adaptability and effectiveness in diverse operational environments.

The growing list of European customers for the CV90 underlines the critical importance of strengthening land forces across the continent. It reflects a strategic shift toward interoperable, high-end armored capabilities among NATO allies and partners. By involving Lithuanian businesses in the assembly of the CV90 fleet, the joint Nordic-Baltic initiative is set to enhance regional defense readiness, improve logistics and maintenance infrastructure, and foster greater autonomy from external suppliers.

The integration of Lithuania into the CV90 production chain illustrates the broader trend of European countries collaborating more closely on defense procurement and manufacturing. At a time when Europe faces increasing security challenges, initiatives like this strengthen the resilience and effectiveness of regional defense systems, build industrial synergies, and affirm the shared commitment to collective security within NATO.
