Sweden Strengthens Its Medical Evacuation Capabilities with 100 MUV 4x4 Vehicles from Italian IDV.
As part of its strategic partnership with Italian manufacturer IDV (Iveco Defence Vehicles), the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) announced on LinkedIn on June 4, 2025, a new order for 100 medical vehicles intended for the Swedish Armed Forces. This acquisition follows a framework agreement signed in 2023 for the potential delivery of up to 3,000 light vehicles. The agreement is part of a broader effort to modernize Sweden's logistical capabilities and provide versatile tactical platforms capable of operating under extreme conditions.

This new order follows an initial batch placed at the start of the framework contract’s implementation. At that time, FMV ordered 400 vehicles in three configurations: 200 flatbed, 100 troop transport, and 100 medical. The recently approved additional batch of 100 medical units reinforces this last category, reflecting Sweden's intention to strengthen its field medical evacuation capability.
The vehicles belong to the MUV (Military Utility Vehicle) family, a platform developed by IDV that combines robustness, mobility, and modularity. Designed for both military and emergency response missions, the MUV represents an evolution in tactical logistics. Its design is based on a mix of proven commercial technologies and targeted innovations to ensure operational reliability in the most demanding environments—from the icy terrain of northern Scandinavia to potential crisis zones abroad.
The MUV family is the latest generation of light military vehicles developed by IDV, following the M40E15-WM, of which over 18,000 units have been produced over the past 30 years. Designed for maximum versatility, MUVs are available in multiple configurations, including chassis cab, crew cab, van, and special forces variants. This allows them to perform a wide range of roles such as troop transport, medical evacuation, logistics support, civil protection, and specialized missions. With six different wheelbase options and three gross vehicle weight classes (from 5.5 to 7 tonnes), the MUV can be tailored to specific operational needs, supporting up to 14+2 personnel or a maximum payload of 4 tonnes.
Technically, the MUV integrates commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components, ensuring a high level of reliability and maintainability while reducing logistical complexity. It is powered by FPT engines delivering either 150 or 180 horsepower, compliant with Euro III or Euro VI standards, and can be paired with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle features permanent 4x4 drive with lockable differentials, independent front suspension with torsion bar, reinforced metallic protection for key mechanical components, and an externally controlled tire inflation system (ECTIS). Its electrical system includes both 12V and 24V circuits, NATO-standard sockets, blackout lights, front winch, weapon mounts, and a NATO-compliant auxiliary power interface.
Built to operate in extreme conditions ranging from –32 °C to +49 °C, MUVs are compatible with low-grade diesel fuels or kerosene. Their high-strength steel structure, combined with disc brakes and ABS/ESP, provides off-road performance, safety, and durability. Supported by a global Iveco logistics network, the MUV is designed to be operational in a variety of scenarios, from territorial defence to civil emergency response.
The addition of these 100 new medical vehicles also reflects Sweden’s interest in standardizing its logistical fleet around a unified architecture, facilitating maintenance, interoperability, and operational responsiveness. The framework agreement offers a level of flexibility in planning and delivery that allows FMV to adapt procurement to evolving needs.
This second order under the MUV program confirms Sweden’s commitment to the ongoing modernization of its logistical and medical capabilities. The selection of multi-role vehicles suited to contemporary battlefield requirements aligns with broader objectives of operational efficiency and strategic resilience.
