An army statement says the Hatf-VII or Babur missile, which has a range of 600 kilometres, was test-fired from an undisclosed location Thursday. The statement did not specifically say if the missile could carry nuclear warheads.

Launched from ground-based transporter erector launchers, warships and submarines, the Babur can be armed with a conventional or nuclear warhead and has a reported range of 600 km. The missile is designed to avoid radar detection and penetrate enemy air defences.

Pakistan and its nuclear-armed rival neighbouring India routinely test different versions of their missiles. The two countries have fought three wars since they gained independence from Britain in 1947.
