The
Thai government approved a request on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, of $2.2
million budget for the procurement of new armored vehicles for the Royal
Thai Police. This budget will be used to acquire 33 one-ton vehicles for
use by police units operating in the deep south of Thailand, government
spokesman Tossaporn Serirak said. |

Of the total, 27 would replace old vehicles which had been in use for more than eight years and six would replace those damaged in field operations. Currently, the Thai police use American-made wheeled armored vehicles V-150 commando which was developed in the early 1960s by the Terra-Space division of the Cadillac Gage company.The spokesman said
the new vehicles would also boost the morale of police operating in
the southern border provinces. The Budget Bureau has told the National Police to use its annual budget to procure the other 177 vehicles. Police said armoured personnel carriers help reduce casualties and boost the morale of security officials working in the restive South. |
